🐾 Health Conditions to Watch for in Aging Pets

As pets enter their senior years, subtle changes can be early signs of age‑related conditions. Catching these shifts early helps us keep your pet comfortable, mobile, and thriving.

Common senior‑pet conditions to keep an eye on:
• Arthritis & joint pain — stiffness, slowing down, reluctance to jump or climb
• Cognitive decline (dog or cat dementia) — confusion, nighttime pacing, accidents, changes in routine
• Kidney disease — increased thirst, frequent urination, weight loss
• Heart disease — coughing, tiring quickly, fainting, labored breathing
• Thyroid disorders
— Hyperthyroidism in cats: weight loss despite eating more
— Hypothyroidism in dogs: weight gain, low energy, skin changes
• Dental disease — bad breath, drooling, dropping food, pawing at the mouth
• Vision or hearing loss — bumping into objects, not responding to cues
• New lumps or bumps — many are benign, but some need attention
• Weight changes — sudden gain or loss can signal metabolic or organ issues

If you’re noticing any of these signs — even small ones — we’re here to help guide you through senior‑pet care with gentle diagnostics and personalized treatment plans.

❤️ Why Pet First Aid Matters

• Pets hide pain and illness, so early action is crucial
• Quick responses can prevent complications from injuries, toxins, heat, or allergic reactions
• Knowing what not to do is just as important as knowing what to do

🧰 Build a Pet First Aid Kit

A good kit includes:
• Gauze, non‑stick pads, and adhesive tape
• Digital thermometer
• Tweezers and blunt‑tip scissors
• Saline eye wash
• Hydrogen peroxide (for vet‑directed use only)
• Extra leash, towel, and gloves
• Your pet’s medical records and emergency contacts

🚨 Situations Where First Aid Helps

• Cuts, scrapes, or broken nails
• Bee stings or allergic reactions
• Heat stress
• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Minor wounds until a vet can evaluate
• Safely transporting an injured pet

🐶🐱 What to Do First

✔️ Stay calm—your pet will take cues from you
✔️ Keep your pet restrained to prevent further injury
✔️ Call your veterinarian for guidance
✔️ Seek emergency care for trouble breathing, collapse, seizures, or major trauma

Highland Veterinary Clinic is here to support you in every season of your pet’s health, including the unexpected ones.

🐾 April is Heartworm Awareness Month
Heartworm disease is serious, silent, and completely preventable. As the weather warms and mosquitoes return now is the time to make sure your pets are protected.

❤️ Why prevention matters:
• Heartworms are spread by a single mosquito bite
• Dogs and cats can be affected
• Damage to the heart and lungs can be severe before symptoms appear
• Monthly prevention is far safer—and far less costly—than treatment

🩺 What you can do today:
✔️ Schedule your pet’s annual heartworm test
✔️ Keep up with monthly heartworm, flea, and tick prevention
✔️ Ask our team which product is right for your pet’s lifestyle

Highland Veterinary Clinic is here to help keep your pets safe all year long.

🦠 Lyme Disease Prevention for Dogs & Cats: What Every Pet Owner Should Know This Spring

As the weather warms and ticks become active again, it’s the perfect time to protect your pets from Lyme disease — one of the most common tick‑borne illnesses in Pennsylvania. Even indoor pets can be at risk, and early prevention is always easier than treatment.

🐾 What Is Lyme Disease?

Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, spread through the bite of infected black‑legged (deer) ticks. Dogs are especially susceptible, but cats can also carry ticks into the home and may experience tick‑related illnesses.

⚠️ Signs of Lyme Disease in Dogs

Dogs may show:
• Limping that shifts from leg to leg
• Fever
• Lethargy
• Swollen joints
• Loss of appetite
• In severe cases: kidney complications

Cats rarely show classic Lyme symptoms, but ticks on cats still pose a risk to the household and other pets.

🛡️ How to Protect Your Pets

1. Use monthly flea & tick preventatives
Consistent prevention is the #1 defense. We carry fast‑acting options for both dogs and cats that kill ticks quickly — before they can transmit disease.

2. Consider the Lyme vaccine (dogs only)
For dogs who spend time outdoors, hike, or live in wooded or grassy areas, vaccination adds an extra layer of protection.

3. Do daily tick checks
Focus on:
• Ears
• Neck and collar area
• Between toes
• Under the tail
• Groin and armpits

4. Keep your yard tick‑unfriendly
• Mow grass regularly
• Remove leaf litter
• Create a barrier between lawn and woods

5. Avoid high‑risk areas during peak tick activity
Ticks are most active in spring, summer, and early fall — especially in wooded or brushy areas.
