Headin' Home Pet Rescue, Inc. Headin' Home Pet Rescue was founded in 2008 by Dr. Jim Bader and Merri Van D**e.

We have placed numerous animals (dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs) in new homes and our mission is to provide the best care to our animals during their stay at the rescue and place them in a home dedicated to helping beyond their needs. In 2022, Emily Wolters and Kenzie Shannon followed their dream and continue to manage the rescue. Dogs are adopted out spayed/neutered, microchipped, heartworm

and tick disease tested if old enough, and current on all core vaccines. Cats are adopted out spayed/neutered, microchipped, FIV and FeLV tested, and current on all core vaccines.

Do you remember Mew who came to us with the bad eyes? Look how much better she is doing now!!

She is ready to find her fur-ever home. However she does need a special home. We found out she has FIV which stands for Feline immunodeficiency virus. This means she will have a weakened immune system which can lead her to be more prone to infections. Despite this, she can still live a long and happy life!

She cannot go to a home where she will be around other cats nor where she can go outside and risk spreading the virus to other cats. She can live with dogs as the virus does not spread to dogs. She can live with another cat that also has FIV.

We believe Mew is about 8 weeks old. She is so beautiful, sweet, and full of s***k!

Our sweet hospice girl, Ellie, came into the clinic for an emergency visit last night after her breathing changed drastically and very quickly. Her hospice family knew something wasn’t right and wanted to make sure she was okay. 💔

Thank you so much to Dr. Andrea for fitting our girl in and caring for her when she needed it most.

Unfortunately, the X-rays revealed heartbreaking news. Ellie appeared to have a large mass taking up most of the space in her lungs, making it incredibly difficult for her to breathe. This wasn’t the news any of us expected, and her hospice family brought her home so they could process it all together. We started Ellie on steroids to help keep her comfortable while they made the difficult decisions ahead.

Today, her hospice family made the incredibly compassionate decision to say goodbye and let Ellie go peacefully. 🌈💔

While our hearts are broken, we are beyond grateful for the family who opened their home and, even more importantly, their hearts to this sweet girl. For the past year, they gave Ellie love, comfort, patience, and the kind of home every hospice animal deserves.

We truly don’t believe Ellie would have ever made it out of the shelter without Lisa and her family. They gave her a year back in home, one she may never have had otherwise. It was filled with love, safety, and knowing what it meant to be someone’s cherished girl.

Thank you for choosing Ellie. Thank you for loving her. And thank you for being there when it mattered most. ❤️

Sadly, we had a heartbreaking update on our beautiful calico friend, Flora. 💔

It appeared that Flora was much sicker than we had hoped. Since coming into our care, she hadn’t been able to recover from the upper respiratory infection she arrived with. Unfortunately, because of her underlying disease, Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV), her immune system was severely compromised, making it incredibly difficult for her little body to fight off infections.

Because of her illness, Flora wouldn’t have been able to safely live with other cats due to the risk of spreading FeLV. Sadly, her prognosis was very poor. As much as it broke our hearts, we felt that her quality of life had continued to decline, and the kindest gift we could give her was a peaceful goodbye. 💔

We were so sorry we couldn’t do more for this sweet girl. But we were incredibly grateful that she found her way to us. Instead of continuing to suffer alone outside, Flora got to experience love, warmth, soft blankets, full meals, and the comfort of being safe indoors. She got to know what it felt like to be cared for and loved.

Sometimes rescue wasn’t about the happy ending we all hoped for. Sometimes, rescue meant making sure an animal was loved, cherished, and shown kindness when their body could no longer keep going. It meant giving them comfort when they needed it most and making sure they didn’t have to face their final moments alone.

A very special thank you to Lori, who helped get Flora safely into our care, and to Karlee, who made sure she received extra love and attention these last few days, as well as the rest of Mapleview’s Kennel Crew who loved her as their own. We were heartbroken that we couldn’t give Flora more time, but we were so grateful she got to spend her final days surrounded by people who cared deeply for her.

Flora deserved compassion, comfort, and love and we were honored that we could give her those things.

Rescue life can hold some of the highest highs and lowest lows all in the same day. 💔🐾

Last night, we welcomed three new dog friends into the rescue, all made possible because of some truly wonderful foster homes who opened their hearts and homes to them. We also welcomed a bonus kitten friend after one of our fosters found her on the side of the road. ❤️

Today brings some exciting moments, too. We’ll be getting our new friends checked over, while one of our kitten friends gets their final checkup before we can officially finalize their adoption. These are the highs of highs — exciting, happy moments that remind us why we do what we do.

But they are bittersweet, too, because all three of our new dogs came to us as owner surrenders. There’s always a lot of emotion that comes with welcoming an animal who has lost the home they knew.

And then come the lows of lows.

Today, we say goodbye to our sweet Flora and one of our hospice friends. 💔

Please keep her hospice foster family especially close in your thoughts today. They have loved and cared for this girl for a little over a year, giving her so much extra love, attention, comfort, and a warm home — things she may never have experienced without them. They gave her a place where she was safe, cherished, and deeply loved, and we will forever be grateful for that gift.

So please excuse us if we are a little quiet over the next few days. Moments like these take an emotional toll, and sometimes we need a little time to process the highs, the lows, the heartbreak, and the happy moments that come with rescue life.

I want to give A very special shoutout to Kenzie, who helped assist our amazing doctors through all of these visits on top of her normal work load, and to our wonderful veterinary team for squeezing in appointments that simply couldn’t wait. We are so grateful for everyone who helps us care for these animals, especially on the hard days.

And, as always, we cannot thank YOU enough — every foster, adopter, volunteer, donor, supporter, and friend who continues to help make all of this possible. None of these happy endings, second chances, or peaceful goodbyes would be possible without you. ❤️

We are so excited to share Teddy found his fur-ever home! 🏡🐾. Teddy is very loved already and he found a new best friend with his little human, Ryan. Ryan told us all about how he researched the best ways to train dogs, so we know Teddy is in good hands ❤️

Poor Helper Fi was convinced some of that delicious-smelling canned food was for him. 😹

Mew had to break the news: “Sorry, Fiasco… this fan club came through, and it’s all for me!” 💕

In all seriousness, thank you so much to everyone who has sent canned food for Mew. More has been arriving every day, and we are incredibly grateful for your generosity.

Because of your support, not only is Mew getting the nutrition she needs to continue healing, but all of the kittens in our rescue will be excited to have a stocked canned food supply again.

Thank you for always showing up for our animals. We truly couldn’t do this without you. ❤️🐾
