👀 One reason Blastomycosis is so challenging? It often looks like something else first.

We’ve seen cases mistaken for:
• Pneumonia
• Orthopedic injuries
• Eye disease
• General “not feeling well”

Because symptoms vary so much between patients, Blastomycosis can sometimes take time to diagnose.

At our clinic, diagnosis may include:
✔️ Physical exam
✔️ Chest x-rays
✔️ Urine antigen testing
✔️ Additional diagnostics depending on symptoms

📍 With increasing reports near the Iron Range and Boundary Waters, awareness is key. Knowing the signs could help your pet get treatment sooner.

💊 Can dogs recover from Blastomycosis? Yes — but early diagnosis matters.

Treatment for Blastomycosis usually involves several months of antifungal medication and close monitoring throughout recovery.

Many dogs improve significantly with treatment, but because the disease can affect the lungs, eyes, bones, and other organs, catching it early is important.

🚩 Persistent cough, unexplained lethargy, vision changes, or limping should never be ignored — especially after outdoor exposure in northern Minnesota.

If you’re concerned your dog may be showing signs of Blasto, contact your veterinarian for an evaluation.

New Service Spotlight: Cryotherapy for Pets

Did you know that some small skin growths and bumps on dogs and cats can be treated with cryotherapy? ❄️🐾

We’re excited to now offer this treatment option at our clinic using our new cryotherapy unit! Cryotherapy works by freezing targeted tissue and can be a minimally invasive option for select superficial masses, skin tags, and other small lesions.

One of the biggest benefits? For appropriate candidates, cryotherapy can often be a more economical alternative to surgically removing a mass under sedation or general anesthesia.

That said, not every lump or bump is suitable for cryotherapy, which is why an exam is important to determine the safest and most effective treatment plan for your pet.

Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at one of our recent cryotherapy procedures! We’re excited to be able to offer another treatment option to help keep pets comfortable while avoiding more invasive procedures when appropriate.

If your pet has a lump or bump you’ve been monitoring, give us a call to schedule an exam and discuss whether cryotherapy may be an option.

🌲 We are continuing to see increased Blastomycosis cases in dogs throughout northern Minnesota, especially near the Iron Range and Boundary Waters areas.

Blasto is a fungal infection picked up from the environment, often near wooded or wet areas.

The challenge? No two cases look exactly alike.

Signs may include:
• Coughing
• Fever
• Lethargy
• Eye inflammation
• Open sores
• Weight loss
• Limping

🩺 If Blastomycosis is suspected, we often use chest radiographs and urine antigen testing to help confirm the diagnosis.

The sooner treatment begins, the better the chance for recovery.

🌲 What exactly is Blastomycosis (“Blasto”)?

Blastomycosis is a fungal infection caused by spores found in the environment — especially in moist soil, wooded areas, and near waterways.

Dogs become infected by breathing in these microscopic spores while exploring outdoors. Hunting dogs and hiking companions may be at higher risk, but any dog can be exposed.

Common signs can include:
• Coughing
• Lethargy
• Fever
• Weight loss
• Eye changes

🐾 Because symptoms can mimic many other illnesses, early veterinary evaluation is important if your dog seems unwell after outdoor exposure.

Meet Cielo — professional snack enthusiast, part-time heartbreaker, and full-time good boy. At 11 years young, Cielo has perfected the art of charming every lady in the clinic with his soulful eyes, wagging tail, and undeniable “handsome gentleman” energy.

He faithfully visits every month for his arthritis injection, although if you ask him, he’s really here for the treats, cuddles, and fan club waiting to greet him. Cielo firmly believes that bravery should always be rewarded with snacks — preferably several. His clinic routine is simple: walk in like a gentleman, collect compliments, tolerate one quick poke, then immediately demand payment in treats and affection.

When he’s not making rounds winning hearts, Cielo can usually be found thinking about his next meal, searching for bonus snacks, or convincing humans he has “definitely never been fed before.” His biggest talents include expert-level treat detection, leaning into cuddles with perfect precision, and being impossibly lovable.

Ever forget a monthly dose… and then realize it days (or weeks) later? You’re not alone. 🐾

That’s why we’re excited to share something NEW at our clinic!

We now offer two long-acting parasite prevention options:
✔️ A once-yearly injection for heartworm prevention
✔️ A once-yearly injection for flea & tick protection

That’s right—12 full months of protection with a single dose. No more monthly reminders, no more missed doses, and no gaps in coverage.

Heartworm disease is spread by mosquitoes and can cause serious damage to the heart and lungs. Tick-borne diseases (like Lyme disease) can lead to joint pain, fever, and long-term health issues. The good news? Both are preventable with consistent protection.

These options help protect your pet from serious, preventable diseases while making life a whole lot easier for you.
Curious if your pet is a good fit? Give us a call or ask us at your next visit!
