New month, new training goals, and the perfect opportunity to build better habits before the holiday chaos begins! 🧡

With Thanksgiving and Christmas right around the corner, NOW is the time to start working on those behaviors you've been putting off!

🐾 Does your dog jump all over guests when they arrive?

🐾 Struggle to settle down when company is over?

🐾 Beg at the dinner table or steal food when nobody's looking?

🐾 Bolt through open doors?

🐾 Forget all their manners the second distractions appear?

You're definitely not alone! 😂

The good news? A little consistent training each day can make a HUGE difference before the holidays arrive.

Throughout November, Run Free K9 will be sharing fun, simple training challenges to help you and your pup prepare for holiday gatherings, visiting family, tempting food, and all the excitement that comes with this time of year!

🎃🐾 Halloween Safety for Your Pup! 🐾👻

Halloween is full of fun for us, but for our dogs it can mean strange costumes, nonstop doorbells, excited kids, open doors, tempting candy, and LOTS of things they don’t normally encounter.

A little planning can help keep Halloween fun instead of frightening!

🍫 Keep the candy out of reach
Chocolate and xylitol can be dangerous for dogs, and don’t forget about those unattended trick-or-treat bags sitting on the floor!

🍬 Watch the wrappers & small items
Candy wrappers, lollipop sticks, small toys, and decorations can quickly become choking or blockage hazards.

🎃 Secure your decorations
Keep electrical cords, candles, breakable decorations, and anything tempting to chew safely away from your dog.

🚪 Watch those open doors!
With trick-or-treaters coming and going, even a dog who normally respects the doorway can slip out. Use gates, crates, leashes, or place work to add an extra layer of safety.

👻 Costumes should be comfortable
If your dog is dressing up, make sure their costume doesn’t restrict movement, breathing, hearing, or vision. If your dog is uncomfortable, skip the costume! The cute picture isn’t worth stressing them out.

🧙 Trick-or-treaters can be overwhelming
Kids running, screaming, wearing masks, and reaching toward your dog can be a LOT. Your dog does not need to greet everyone! Give them a quiet, comfortable space away from the front door if that’s what they need.

Before the festivities begin, get in some exercise, prepare enrichment or a favorite chew, make sure ID tags and microchip information are current, and set your dog up somewhere they feel safe.

Most importantly—ADVOCATE FOR YOUR DOG. 💙

They don’t have to love Halloween. They don’t have to wear a costume. They don’t have to greet the kids. They don’t have to participate at all.

Sometimes the happiest Halloween for your dog is a comfy bed, a good chew, and absolutely no idea what kind of chaos is happening at the front door. 😂🐶

🐾💙 Happy Vet Tech Week! 💙🐾

Behind every healthy, happy pet is an incredible veterinary team—and vet techs are truly at the heart of it.

They’re the ones comforting our pets when they’re scared, assisting during exams and surgeries, drawing blood, giving medications, monitoring patients, running tests, educating pet parents, answering our endless questions, and showing compassion during some of the hardest moments of pet ownership.

And so much of what they do happens behind the scenes. 🩺🐶🐱

Vet techs wear a LOT of hats, and their job takes an incredible amount of knowledge, patience, strength, compassion, and love for animals.

So during Vet Tech Week, October 18–24, I want to give a huge THANK YOU to all of the amazing veterinary technicians who dedicate their days to caring for our beloved pets. 💚

🎾🐾 October 17th is National Fetch Day! 🐾🎾

Fetch doesn’t have to be JUST about throwing a ball over and over until your arm falls off. 😂 It can actually be an amazing training game!

If your dog LOVES fetch, you already have something incredibly valuable: MOTIVATION. Use it!

Instead of simply throwing the ball, sprinkle a little training into every round:

🐾 SIT before the toss
Ask for a sit and a little patience before releasing them to chase. This is a great way to practice impulse control around something they REALLY want.

🐾 DOWN between rounds
Mix in different commands instead of immediately throwing again. Excitement doesn’t mean obedience disappears!

🐾 RECALL with the ball
Once they grab it, call them back to you. Coming all the way back is part of the game—not running laps around the yard while you negotiate. 😂

🐾 Practice DROP IT
The next throw becomes the reward for releasing the ball. Drop it → ball gets thrown again!

🐾 Use a RELEASE WORD
Don’t let the flying ball automatically mean GO! Ask for your sit, build a little anticipation, throw the ball, and then release with “BREAK!” or your normal release word.

Suddenly one simple game is working on:

Impulse control
Recalls
Sits & downs
Drop it
Engagement
Focus around excitement
Mental AND physical exercise

And the best part? Your dog thinks you’re just playing. 😉

That’s one of my favorite ways to train—take something your dog already LOVES and turn it into an opportunity to practice real-life skills.

Keep sessions short, fun, and successful, and stop while your dog is still excited to play. Leave them wanting one more throw!

Play. Train. Bond. 💙💚🧡

🐾💙 WELCOME TO THE RUN FREE K9 PACK, BUCK! 💙🐾

Everyone meet Buck, a handsome 10-month-old chocolate Lab with a BIG personality and an even bigger love for life! 🐶

This happy-go-lucky farm pup is everything you'd expect from a young Labrador—energetic, playful, goofy, and always ready for his next adventure!

The good news? Buck is EXTREMELY motivated by toys, food, and human attention, which gives us an awesome foundation to work with!

The challenge? Buck hasn't quite earned his off-leash freedom yet! 😅

Living on a farm means there's plenty of room to explore, but with all that freedom comes responsibility. Right now, Buck struggles with recalls, leash manners, and making good decisions when something exciting catches his attention.

And let's just say... sticks, pinecones, trash, and chasing cats are a few of his favorite hobbies!🤦‍♀️😂

Buck will be joining us for a 2-WEEK BOARD & TRAIN, where we'll be focusing on:

🐾 Reliable Recalls: Teaching Buck that coming when called is nonnegotiable, even with exciting distractions!

🌲 Leave It & Drop It: Learning that not everything he finds belongs in his mouth! We'll also work on impulse control around cats and other tempting distractions.

🦮 Leash Manners: Turning those overly enthusiastic walks into enjoyable adventures with better engagement and less pulling.

💤 The Art of Doing Nothing: Teaching this busy boy how to settle, relax, and turn off that Labrador energy when it's time to unwind.

💙 Impulse Control & Engagement: Helping Buck make better decisions and learn that listening to his handler is just as rewarding as exploring the world!

One of my favorite things about working with dogs like Buck is that he already has so much enthusiasm for learning! We just need to channel all that energy into productive behaviors.

Our ultimate goal? To help Buck earn more freedom on the farm while giving his family the confidence that he'll listen when it matters most.

Because at Run Free K9, we believe freedom is earned through trust, training, and reliability! 🐾
