This is an exercise I recommend frequently to strengthen and increase topline. Remember that we can do plenty of important things with our horses that don’t require riding. Winter is an excellent time to put in some short but meaningful work.

Backing up is a low-impact exercise with no moment of suspension. It can be done in-hand and ridden. You horse should move his limbs in diagonal pairs.

Executed correctly with relaxation, impulsion and with the head lowered, the movement increases the throacic vertebral rotation, encourages core recruitment of the abdominals , thoracic sling and hip flexors. It also contributes to back mobility, the ability to collect and good posture.

This exercise requires your horse to carry more weight on his hindquarters, and maintain increased hindlimb, lumbosacral and back joint flexion throughout the stride cycle.

For maximum benefit ask your horse to back up in-hand daily. Start with 1 or 2 steps and progress to 20 steps. The aim is good quality, long, marching steps.

Due to the recent overwhelming demand for Erreplus saddles it has come to our attention that someone that was never affiliated with Erreplus as well as a former fitter that is no longer affiliated with Erreplus is not being transparent, and is still giving customers the impression that they are still a representative for Erreplus. Please know that for Pennsylvania and Maryland in their entirety the only authorized and trained Erreplus fitter is AD Saddlery. Allowing anyone other than AD Saddlery to service your existing Erreplus saddle can void Erreplus’s generous warranty and any saddle purchased through a non Erreplus affiliated fitter is not eligible for warranty. I am sorry if this has caused our great customers any confusion. If you are unsure please contact me immediately and I would be happy to assist.
