Update: All pets have found homes

I really appreciate our team. Tonight I (Emily Kuczek) found this family/group of dumped dogs: 2 adult females and 3 puppies (2 males and 1 female). Super friendly. Mom really was nailed by a porcupine. Team came together and we got them all fixed up!

Please let us know if you can help with a permanent home.

After 9/11, search and rescue dogs worked day and night at Ground Zero. They were trained to find survivors in disasters. But in the rubble of the World Trade Center, there were very few survivors to find. As the days went on, the dogs started to look confused. Some got depressed. They were used to finding people. And now, they weren’t. Handlers noticed this and decided to help.

Sometimes, they staged fake rescues. A firefighter or handler would hide in the debris. The dog would find them. They’d act like it was a real rescue. This gave the dog a sense of success. It lifted their spirits.

These dogs were not just working hard. They were emotionally affected too. They were part of the team. And they needed support, just like everyone else.

9/11 - Never forget.

Do you know the story of the 9/11 boat lift? A makeshift armada of about 150 commercial vessels of various types would go back-and-forth, transporting half a million people out of the disaster zone of Lower Manhattan to safety in New Jersey and Brooklyn. It was the largest water evacuation in history and one of the uplifting, if lesser-known, episodes of that terrible day.

Prayers for all affected and for those who are working in recovery efforts.

Last night, six members of the Texas A&M Veterinary Emergency Team, along with two Texas A&M AgriLife Disaster Assessment & Recovery agents, deployed from Bryan-College Station to Kerr County to support ongoing search-and-rescue efforts following the devastating flooding in the region.

As canine search teams — including those from Texas A&M Task Forces and other regional partners — begin the difficult work of locating the missing, the VET is providing essential veterinary care to the working dogs on the front lines. These elite K9 partners are critical to the mission, and our team is committed to helping them stay healthy, safe, and mission-ready.

Our hearts are with the families, loved ones, and communities affected by this tragedy. We are proud to support those working tirelessly in response.
