AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy 🐾 We will support socialization and proper care for your puppy up to one-years-old, as well as, begin obedience cues, and tailor the class to meet the training challenges of our participants. Cues we begin to introduce are: focus, sit, down, stand, stay, drop-it, leave-it, introduce recall, and we help puppy understand leash walking etiquette. the S.T.A.R. Puppy evaluations evaluates the pet parent's dedication to raising their dog (i.e. ensuring vaccinations, proper ID tags or microchipping, and regular grooming and veterinary care) and puppy beginning obedience.

Class Time: 9 AM to 10:30 AM CST
Class Dates: Aug 16, 23, Sep 6, 13, 20, 27, Oct 4, 18.
Cost: $220 (Includes all 8 sessions and the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy certificate

AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC): We work with you and your dog to prepare for their CGC evaluation to demonstrate learning requirements of the program, as well as additional cues to help support your dog to develop obedience. Cues include: Focus, sit, down, heel, stay, recall, leave-it, drop-it, touch, place, and release. The CGC evaluation measures the ability of a dog to accept grooming, behave under supervised separation, sit politely for petting, sit, down, stay, recall, and evaluates a dogs reaction to people and other dogs. We will also tailor class content to meet the training challenges of participants.

Class Time: 11 AM to 12:30 PM CST
Class Dates: Aug 16, 23, Sep 6, 13, 20, 27, Oct 4, 18.

While Kaos magically transports to a tropical beach following his regular grooming appointment 😜 ....step into a moment of ! Keep reading to learn more! 🐾

Kaos' before picture in the bottom right shows the undercoat emerging (every 5-8 weeks depending on coat). His after photo shows how he looks when leaving his ! These coats, while not cut, need regular grooming as the & out there! Kaos' mom takes amazing care of his coat (and his pack) with regular brushing and maintaining a regular grooming schedule.

We often receive requests for double-coated and triple-coated dogs to be shaved for the summer with intentions to make the cooler. This is a a MYTH becuase it actaully hinders their ability to self-regulate temperature and places them at risk for sunburn, skin cancer, and overheating.

What is a de-shed and why?

A de-shed is the process where we remove undercoat without cutting, trimming, or shaving any fur! We will tell you, it looks like they have had a hair cut (look at Kaos' after photo)! Why? Because removing undercoat that is read to come out helps the outer coat lay flatter, as it is supposed to. Also, the undercoat captures and holds onto cooler air to help the dog regulate temperature.

At Beachy Dogs, we begin the de-shed process in the bath! Using special products, tools, order of applying shampoo and conditioner, and using water temperature, we support the natural shedding process.

Following the bath, we dry the thoroughly and continue with a process using tools to remove remaining fur ready to shed. The dry process creates a fur storm with the triple-coated pups - the reason behind the "Bee Keeper" hat 😜🤣

Once this is complete, we tidy those paws, tail and ears as necessary 🥰

What happens if you don't de-shed your dog?
For some coats, you will likely just see more hair. However, for some coats, the undercoat will remain stuck under the guard hairs while new undercoat grows in. This produces an environment for matting. Matting only becomes worse, reduces blood flow to the area, is painful and may result in the shaving a coat that should never be cut, ruining the coat!

The de-shed process does not mean your dog will not shed between grooming appointments. You will notice LESS fur on your floors and furniture! It also makes your dog feel better and promotes skin/coat health!

Beachy Dogs wishes you and your family (furry and human) a very happy and safe 4th of July, celebrating our wonderful country!! Make sure to keep your pup kids safe this weekend! Here is some info (Training Tip at the end!!):

A dog's sense of hearing is far more superior to ours. The sound of fireworks is much louder to your dog. The sound, combined with the unpredicatable pattern they are set off on creates a feeling of threat to your dog, and places their nervous system on constant alert. Dogs don't have the logic that we do, and don't understand that the fireworks are not coming inside the house, so if that "flight response" is triggered, a dog will do anything to escape.

🐾 Never punish or reprimand your dog for being scared during fireworks. The only thing this reinforces to your dog, is they are not safe, even at home with you!

🐾 Keep your dog indoors, and when outside for potty, ensure they are supervised within a safe fence line, or on leash. If on leash, enusre collars and harnesses are properly fit; no more than 2 "finger widths" space, roughly an inch!

🐾 Update the microchip information to aid reunion if your dog runs away. If not microchipped, ensure your dog's collars are fitted with current tags/contact info.

🐾 Consider creating a safe haven! Hopefully you have crate-trained your dog. Place their crate in a room where blinds and curtains have drawn shut. A comfy and cozy basement, further from the sounds of fireworks is a plus. Include your dog's favorite and familiar toys. Provide extra treats, lick mats, and food puzzles (Do consider chewing safety too!).

🐾Play calming music and provide calming scents like lavender.

🐾Thunder vests may be helpful.

🐾 If you are not able to stay with your pet, try to provide familiar human company.

🐾 If you set off fireworks, DON'T!! Leave it to the professionals!

Training Tip:
If you know your dog struggles with thunderstorms and fireworks, consider working on desensitization. While you cannot completely desensitize your dog, you can work towards providing them training so they hopefully understand safety is at home and know what to do VS. engaging the flight response. Training takes a great deal of time and consistency. While it won't work for this holiday, thunderstorms and fireworks will happen somewhat routinely. Prepare your dog!

1. Enusre a calm stetting at home and provide the safe haven components listed above.
2. Play the sounds of fireworks and thunderstorms on a device. Ensure the volume is low. You might not hear it, but your dog will.
3. While playing the sounds, comfort your dog with soft pats, an encouraging and safe vocal tone, and provide many high-value treats. (dogs decide what is high-value).
4. Over a period of time, slightly increase the volume during each training session.
5. Consider your dog's comfort level. Lower the volume, or end the session if your dog is becoming stressed.
6. The goal is not to make your dog love fireworks and head to the show with you. The goal is to help your dog understand they are safe home when those sounds are present, easing their nervous system and avoiding the flight response.
