Building a genuine and solid bond with your dog is half the battle when it comes most training programs. A dog that is connected to their handler is a dog that is more likely to respond to the lessons we are trying to teach. So, how do you bond with your dog?

We were all taught the same lie.
If they're not fighting, they're playing.

So we stand there, watching something that feels "off".

A bit too intense. All a wee bit too much.
One dog ducks behind the bench while the other keeps coming.

And we tell ourselves "they're just playing" because we don't want to be "that" person. The overprotective one.

So I need you to hear this:

No dog has ever been harmed by you stopping play too early.
Not one. Ever.

But I've met hundreds who were harmed because no one stopped it in time.

Here's what no one really talks about enough,
Sometimes it's not that obvious to see the difference between playing and an issue grumbling and bubbling away.
Especially if you don't really know the other dog involved.

So can I give you permission to do something?

Trust the "hmm".

That little feeling in your gut that says "that's a bit much".
That's not you being overbearing or overprotective.
That IS you reading dog body language. That's the skill developing.

You don't need to be 100% sure to step in. If you're unsure, step in anyway.
Call your dog.
Make some space. Give them both a break.

The playful ones will shake it off and often re-engage together, that's how you know it WAS play.

You will never ruin a friendship by pausing play.
You might just save one.

I'm back from vacation and back on my 🐂💩Did ya miss me? 😉 This has to be one of my biggest pet peeves as a dog trainer. We want so bad to help you and your dog but if you hardly give us the chance, nobody wins. Call us today! Ask how we can help. Stop waiting until you're ready to take your dog to a shelter or give it away before intervening with their behavior.

I've been hanging out with lots of different animals lately hoping to learn more about the behavior of different mammals. Can't even lie, Jerri Scherff taught me (all of us) lots about goats and horses and I take that with me when I volunteer. What I've learned so far:

🐐goats are funny AFFFF and will—with intention—lift up your butt cheek without your permission.

🐴Horses are terrifying (in the "wow this thing is massive" kind of way) but can be so docile (or not) and react even more to energy than many dogs do.

🐂Baby Chester the bull is my favorite dog on the farm.

🐺LGDs really embody the saying, "it ain't on ya, it's in ya".

QOTD: Can dogs be manipulative? They lack the malice and dishonesty to execute it but I can understand why owners may first assume their dog trying to be manipulative. I try to make it a point to use terminology that better aligns with our dogs' capabilities but let me know your thoughts in the comments ⬇️
