Hop harvest is the hardest and most rewarding project. This year Old 690 Brewing Company made it out to harvest with us making the load a little lighter and way more fun! Beer tastes better after a little hard work, so be on the lookout for when celebrate with a pint!

Thank you Hamilton Hops for a great morning of hop harvesting. These combined with our own will go into the production of our Harvest Ale.

Next time your having a pint with our friends at Old 690, take a stroll to see fresh hops in bloom!

A damn good beer. Get out before the storm and get a pint, or better get a growler to drink while it snows.

🍺 The wait is OVER .... Introducing our newest beer on tap ... Harvest Ale.

Scouring hops locally from both our own hops field & Hamilton Hops this Copper colored amber beer with aromas of caramel and fruity hops offers a light to medium body. Brewed with the flavors of caramel and honey offers a mild bitterness and finishes dry with a subtle fresh hop aftertaste. This beer comes in with 5.0 ABV.

Look what arrived last night. We ordered these during our visit to Michigan in February. A lot has changed since then, but we still want to make sure anyone interested in growing hops has access to clean plants at an affordable price. Sandy Ridge Farms has once again provided us with beautiful, field ready, hops.
We have about 30 that still need a home. They were originally going to be for sale next weekend Old 690 Brewing Company for Gardens in the Gap. This is the perfect time to plant these perennials.

Doing things on a small scale is hard work and can be frustrating at times... but we aren’t in this alone. It’s nice to see how others overcome some of the same obstacles we face.

What a beautiful sunny day to be in the hop nursery.

We took a quick trip to Grand Rapids Monday. Founders Brewing Co. had some of the best hospitality of any large brewery we have visited, you could smell the wort on the whole block! Brewery Vivant, set in an old church/funeral home, had very yummy and diverse beer with solid offerings using locally grown Michigan hops. DO NOT skip on the food, the andouille and grits was AMAZING!
The real highlight for us was Tuesday when we toured Sandy Ridge Farm and Hop Head Farms. This was the biggest nursery/greenhouse operation and hop production facility we have ever seen. The attention to details in propagating hops for growers is so appreciated, we are excited to work more with Sandy Ridge. While we don't believe we will ever be as big as Hop Head, we walked away ( I mean drove home 9 hours) knowing what we do here is in line with the best in the country.

Right now they are egg masses that will look like a mud patch on a tree. If you find one, scrape it off and either burn it, or put it in a ziplock and submit it to your local Cooperative extension office to confirm its identity.

If not contained, the spotted lanternfly potentially could drain Pennsylvania’s economy of at least $324 million annually and cause the loss of about 2,800 jobs, according to a study carried out by economists in Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences.

We have spent a lot of time working the soil in the hop yard. The plants demand a balance of readily available nutrients. Taking soil samples on a consistent basis helps us to determine if we are “getting it right”. Learning about beneficial fungi has helped us develop more sustainable practices using less chemicals.

Inoculating plants with them has been claimed to benefit their growth. But the scientific evidence might surprise you.

We will be planting these baby Triumph hops at the end of the month. Looks like there will be a few leftover if anyone is looking to grow a new variety. Mid fall is a great time to plant perennials!!
