We tried and failed to get this cross last year. This year thanks to Katherine with West Elk Equine we got it done this year! This cross has been a dream for 10 years! And if you aren't tracking his foals you should they are winning consistently in the barrel and roping pens!

Hello everyone,
As most of you know I am not big on changing things once I have set a schedule for the year. However, the Top Hand event is outgrowing our ability to produce the event in the format that we have presently. I have put a lot of thought into different methods of managing the event as it keeps growing. In the end I have decided to move the event to a two day format.

There are multiple reason I have chosen the two day timeline. The major reason for the change is for the heath and well being of my cattle and the reduction of time that is required to complete two classes on each day. The plus side of the two day schedule is it allows me to add a new type of sorting event that is a brain child of mine. It is called the Cattlemen's Sort. Check out the flyer to learn more about the Cattlemen's Sort. The payouts will be completed as an open jackpot.

We will have the Trail Challenge and Cattle Drive on the first day and the Two Man Sort and Cattlemen's Sort on the second day. Please check out the flyer for more details and start times. We will serve lunch the first day but not the second. Of course there will always be water and some snacks both days.

Vicci and I will be working with the SaddleBook folks to make the updates on SaddleBook and to fix a couple of issues like the late fees. This meeting is on Friday. So it would be helpful if everyone would wait until Saturday before registering for the next event. We are also working on updating everyone's winnings via SaddleBook so we know how you are doing in the standings for the whole series.

On this coming Saturday I will have a free practice for anyone who would like to try the Cattlemen's Sort. We will start at 9AM and try to finish by noon, before it gets too hot for the cattle.

Big News: Our Top Hand Event Is Expanding! 🐂🔥

We’re excited to share that the Top Hand event that was created here at Cross Slash, to honor the legacy of the great American cattle drive is growing — and this year, it’s taking the spotlight as an official Cattlemen's Days event on July 7, 2025!

What started as a grassroots tribute to our ranching roots has gained momentum — even earning a feature in the local paper for its unique way of blending history, horsemanship, and cattle stockmanship. Now, the Gunnison County Fairgrounds will come alive with the dust, energy, and tradition of the trail as skilled teams compete in timed challenges inspired by the classic cattle drive.

Always frustrated that rodeo shirts are so expensive? Well we got the pleasure of meeting the owner of Runnin' Home Ranch Wear. She's a local Colorado business owner. Her shirts are $50-75 a piece. The shirts are zip up with faux buttons, stretchy, breathable, provided UV protection, and are tested to provide relief from the heat up to 113 degrees!

The facilities have greatly improved over the years. Small arena, custom cutting pen (or second arena), and a custom sorting pen that can turn into two round pens. Very thankful for the rain and the heart ground we have.
