💛🐾 Vet Tech Week Spotlight: Meet Makenna! 🐾💛

We’re wrapping up our Vet Tech Week spotlights with another wonderful member of our Goldenrod family — Makenna! 🥰

Makenna may be newer to the veterinary world, but she’s already found a love for it! She graduated from Lander University last year with a degree in Biology and has been enjoying every opportunity to learn, grow, and gain hands-on experience caring for our furry patients. 🩺🐶🐱

When she’s not at Goldenrod, Makenna stays busy with her THREE German Shepherds! 🐕🐕🐕 In her free time, she loves painting, drawing, all things Disney, and of course, a good cup of coffee! ☕🏰🎨

Makenna, we’re so lucky to have you on our team! 💛 Your eagerness to learn, willingness to jump in, and compassion for our patients don’t go unnoticed. We love watching you grow in this field and can’t wait to see all the amazing things you’ll accomplish!

Help us show Makenna some love as we wrap up our Vet Tech Week celebrations! 🐾💛

💛 Next Vet Tech Week Spotlight: Meet Hope! 🐾

Today we’re showing some love to another one of our wonderful veterinary assistants, Hope! 💛

Hope has 5 years of previous veterinary experience and found her way back to vet med when she joined our Goldenrod family in June 2026!

One of the things we love most about Hope is her dedication to making sure both pets AND their people feel comfortable and cared for. She especially loves our feline patients 🐱 and takes pride in helping pet parents better understand their pets’ health and how to care for them at home.

When she’s not loving on our patients, Hope stays busy with her own crew: Zero, her sweet senior kitty; Taz, her brilliant Border Collie; and Ravioli, her goofy Italian Greyhound (pictured with her!). 🐶

Outside the clinic, you’ll find her gaming with friends, spending time with family, watching Star Trek or The Office, and indulging her love of mysteries, history, and all things weird and wonderful!

Hope brings such a fun personality, compassionate heart, and genuine dedication to our little Goldenrod team. We’re so lucky she found her way back to veterinary medicine and into our clinic! 💛

Help us show Hope some love this Vet Tech Week! 🐾💛

🐾💛 Vet Tech Week Spotlight: Meet Mel! 💛🐾

We’re continuing our Vet Tech Week celebrations by shining the spotlight on one of our wonderful veterinary assistants, Mel! 🥰

With over 12 years of experience in veterinary medicine, Mel brings a wealth of knowledge to the Goldenrod team! Her background includes general practice, urgent and emergency care, and specialty medicine. We’re so lucky to have her experience, compassion, and love for animals on our team! 🩺🐶🐱

Outside of work, Mel is a self-proclaimed crazy cat lady and proud pittie mom with a special place in her heart for bully breeds. Her motto? The bigger the blockhead, the better! 😂❤️

When she’s not loving on animals, you can find her embracing all things nerdy, getting lost in a good book, enjoying the great outdoors, or working on her newest hobby—teaching herself to crochet! 🧶📚🌿

Help us show Mel some love this Vet Tech Week! We appreciate everything she brings to Goldenrod and all the care she gives our patients every day! 💛🐾

🐾💛 Happy National Veterinary Technician Week! 💛🐾

This week, we're celebrating the incredible veterinary technicians and assistants who work tirelessly behind the scenes (and often right in front of you!) to keep our furry patients happy, healthy, and comfortable! 🩺🐶🐱

Veterinary technicians and assistants wear SO many hats! They're nurses, phlebotomists, anesthetists, dental hygenists, lab technicians, surgical assistants, patient advocates, educators, professional animal snugglers, and even expert p**p collectors! 💩😂

From comforting nervous pets and monitoring patients under anesthesia to running lab tests, assisting with procedures, administering treatments, and supporting pet parents through difficult moments, their job requires an incredible combination of knowledge, skill, patience, compassion, and a whole lot of heart. ❤️

🌟 Want to help us celebrate? A little appreciation goes a long way! Whether it's a handwritten thank-you note, a sweet treat, a kind word, or simply letting them know how much their care means to you, these small gestures can make a BIG difference.

Our veterinary team gives so much of themselves to care for your pets every single day. This week, let's show them some of that love in return! 🥰

💛 Stay tuned throughout the week as we shine the spotlight on the amazing ladies behind Goldenrod! 🐾 We'll be sharing a little about each of them so you can get to know the hardworking, compassionate faces who help care for your furry family members every day! 🥰

🐾 Meet Rush… our newest little ear-wrap model! 😂💙

Rush spent the day with us at Goldenrod for a sedated procedure to treat an aural hematoma and a pretty nasty ear infection involving both bacteria and yeast!

👂 So, what exactly is an aural hematoma?

An aural hematoma is a pocket of blood that forms between the skin and cartilage of the ear flap. It typically develops when a dog shakes their head excessively or scratches at their ears, causing small blood vessels to rupture. One of the most common triggers? You guessed it… ear infections!

Today, Dr. Layman drained the blood from Rush’s ear and treated the underlying infection to help get him feeling better.

💙 And that goofy little head wrap? It's not just for looks! It helps limit head shaking and keeps compression on the ear flap to reduce the chance of the hematoma filling back up.

While these hematomas can sometimes refill and require additional treatment, we're hoping Rush's ear heals up nicely!

October is a great reminder that one of the simplest things you can do for your dog’s health, and your own is take a walk together.

Doc often talks with pet owners about the importance of regular exercise. But walks offer so much more than just physical activity. They provide an opportunity for you and your dog to spend time together, explore your surroundings and build healthy habits that can benefit both of you for years to come.

For your dog, regular walks can:
🐕 Help maintain a healthy weight and support cardiovascular health
🐕 Strengthen muscles, joints and bones
🐕 Provide mental stimulation through new sights, sounds and smells
🐕 Reduce boredom and help prevent unwanted behaviors
🐕 Support healthy digestion and regular bowel movements
🐕 Give your dog valuable time to explore and socialize

And don't forget about your own health! Walking regularly can improve cardiovascular fitness, support a healthy weight, reduce stress and give you a chance to step away from the demands of the day.

One of the biggest benefits may be the simplest: quality time together. Your dog doesn't care how far you walk or how fast you go. They simply enjoy being with you and experiencing the world by your side.

If your dog isn't accustomed to regular walks, start slowly. A short walk around the neighborhood is a great beginning. As your dog's stamina improves, gradually increase the distance and duration. Always consider your pet's age, breed, weight, joint health and overall condition when establishing an exercise routine.

And remember, walks don't have to be complicated. Put on the leash, step outside and make it part of your everyday routine. Your dog gets exercise, enrichment and time with their favorite person—and you get many of the same benefits.
This Walk Your Dog Week, make a commitment to take a few more steps together. Your dog will probably think it's the best part of their day! 🐾

Meet Teddy, who came to Goldenrod for a surgical evaluation after receiving care at UrgentVet. An encounter with the family dog left him with a severe degloving tail injury, resulting in extensive soft tissue loss.

After carefully evaluating the damage, we determined that a partial tail amputation was the best option to give Teddy the best chance to heal comfortably. These decisions are never taken lightly—our priority is always our patient’s comfort and quality of life.

Send this sweet boy some love as he begins his next chapter. We’re rooting for you, Teddy! 💛

🦝 Today is World Rabies Day!

Rabies is a virus that affects the brain and nervous system. It can spread to pets and people through the bite or scratch of an infected animal. Once symptoms appear, it’s nearly always fatal—but vaccination can prevent it.

Here in South Carolina, rabies is most often found in wildlife, especially raccoons. Skunks, foxes, and bats can carry it, too. That’s why it’s important to give wildlife space and keep our pets protected. 🐾

South Carolina requires dogs, cats, and ferrets to stay current on their rabies vaccines—including indoor cats! Not sure when your pet is due? Give us a call at Goldenrod Veterinary Hospital, and we’ll help you check. 💛
