The Greenville Humane Society is one of the largest no-kill shelters in the southeast, just behind Atlanta. Since we changed locations in 2011, we have placed over 48,000 animals in their forever homes. Beyond adoptions, we also have one of the largest public low cost spay/neuter and vaccination clinics in South Carolina. Every number tells a story, and this month, we’re especially proud of one:

✨ 947 spay/neuter surgeries completed! ✨

That’s 947 pets protected from contributing to the cycle of unplanned litters. 947 opportunities to reduce shelter over-crowding. 947 investments in a healthier future for the animals in our community.

While we’re proud of all the lives touched through our programs this month, this milestone feels particularly special because it’s just the beginning.

By the end of this month, our brand-new Spay & Neuter Clinic is slated to open its doors – and with it, our surgery capacity is expected to DOUBLE. That means even more pets served, more families helped, and an even greater impact across our community.

Thank you for supporting our mission and helping make growth like this possible. Keep an eye out on our monthly stats in the future ahead – we can’t wait to show you what’s next. 💚🐾

At 11 years old, this sweet little terrier should be spending her days curled up on a soft bed, soaking up the sunshine and enjoying the comfort of a family who loves her.

Instead, she’s sitting in a kennel.

After the passing of her owner, her whole world changed overnight. The person she knew, the home she loved, the life she counted on – gone in an instant. Now, she’s trying to navigate a shelter environment that’s loud, unfamiliar, and overwhelming for a quiet, senior pup.

She’s a timid soul who takes a little time to feel safe, but who can blame her? Despite everything she’s been through, she’s gentle, sweet, and seems to do well with calm and respectful dogs.

All Schotzie needs is a cozy spot on the couch, a patient hand, a home where she can let out a big exhale... and maybe a little bit of a diet.

Senior dogs have so much love left to give, and this little lady deserves so much more than spending her golden years behind a kennel.

Sweet Journey is now spending time recovering in a staff home while we await next steps. Please make sure to always tap the hood of your car, especially when it’s chilly out or weather is poor - as many kitties will seek out shelter beneath vehicles. 💚

Journey endured.

When she was found trapped inside a vehicle engine, everyone believed she was already gone. The assumption was that she had died beneath the hood. The car was driven all the way to a mechanic so her body could be removed.

But Journey wasn’t dead.

While the vehicle traveled mile after mile, while plans were being made to recover what everyone thought was a deceased cat, Journey was still alive.

Still suffering. Still fighting.

Somewhere beneath that engine, this tiny cat was enduring unimaginable pain. We can only imagine her fear. The heat. The confusion. Her desperate attempts to escape. Every injury she carries tells the story of an animal who refused to give up, even as her body was being ravaged.

Journey likely crawled beneath the car seeking shelter from rain or bad weather. Instead, she became trapped in a nightmare.

She sustained extensive burns over much of her body. She has injuries consistent with desperately trying to claw and fight her way free from the hot engine compartment. Worst of all, she suffered a puncture wound to her skull that pierced her sinus cavity. One of her legs has sustained significant damage, and we still don’t know if it can recover or if amputation will be necessary.

The reality is heartbreaking. While everyone believed her fight was already over, Journey was still fighting for her life every second.

Every mile. Every moment. And somehow, against all odds, she survived.

Today, Journey is finally safe. She is receiving pain medication, wound care, veterinary treatment, and all the comfort we can give her. Our team is doing everything possible to keep her comfortable as we evaluate the full extent of her injuries and determine what comes next.

This is one of the most gruesome and tragic cases we have seen. It is difficult to comprehend the suffering she endured before help finally arrived.

And as long as she keeps fighting, so will we.

We are turning to our community for support as we work to cover the expenses of her medical treatment. Donations of any size will help provide the treatment, surgeries, medications, and ongoing support she desperately needs.

Please donate if you’re able. Please share her story. And please keep Journey in your thoughts as this brave little cat begins the long road to recovery.

After everything she has survived, she deserves the chance to finally know kindness, comfort, and safety.

We need to talk about Rip... because honestly? We’ve discovered that his name is TOTALLY misleading.

Sure, he might LOOK like a tough guy. He’s mostly-staffy, nearly 60 lbs, and built like he could star in an action movie. But the truth is? Rip is a certified baby. A giant, soft-hearted cuddle-loving marshmallow in a dog suit. Does he bark at the kennel door sometimes? Yes. But not because he’s trying to intimidate you, it’s because he wants to be let out and held like the overgrown toddler he is.

This 1 year old sweetheart lives for frozen peanut butter treats, cozy blankets, and post-zoomie naps with his blocky head draped dramatically across your lap. He doesn’t really want to “rip” anything apart... except maybe your personal space.

So we’ve decided: RIP NEEDS A NEW IDENTITY! A name that fits his tender little soul.

Help us rename him! Comment below your best suggestions for this oversized cuddle big and let’s find the perfect name for our sweet boy. 💚

The lab puppies have arrived, and they are EVERYTHING you want a Labrador puppy to be – chocolate, black, squishy little bundles of cuteness with oversized paws, wiggly tails, and enough spunky energy to power the entire shelter.

They’re playful, curious, cuddly, mischievous, and already professional snack inspectors. One minute they're tumbling over each other in a puppy pile, the next they're zooming around like tiny, caffeinated bears.

If you’ve been dreaming about puppy breath, goofy lab smiles, and a best friend who thinks every day is the best day ever... this is your sign. 💚

Usually, our posts tell stories that love heals all wounds.

We just wish that was true for Bandit.

At just 3 years old, Bandit has now spent nearly 130 days at GHS. Before he came into our care, he was found after being struck by a vehicle, a severely broken leg dragging behind him. We fixed the bone. We gave him time to recover. We kept believing that once his body healed, the rest would follow.

But some injuries just don’t show up on x-rays.

The truth about Bandit is hard to say out loud because we know it may make people scroll right past him. Bandit is scared of strangers. Deeply, painfully afraid. We don’t know exactly what his life was like before us, but whatever it was, it has clearly left marks all over his heart.

Bandit will not be the dog who runs into your arms at the first meeting.

He is not the dog who greets you with tail wags and kisses through the kennel door.

Trust does not come easily to Bandit - but when it does, it is incredibly special. Over his time here, he has built a small circle of human friends he feels safe with, and once you’re in that circle, you get to see the dog he truly is underneath all the fear.

But after almost 130 days in a shelter kennel, we are watching that fear slowly swallow him whole. But the moments in between are what keep us, and Bandit, going.

The moments shown here of him curling into the arms of a staff member he trusts. The moments where he runs through the yard with the tiniest puppies and the biggest dogs - carefree for just a second, like he remembers what joy feels like. The moments where his walls come down and you realize there is a beautiful dog trapped underneath years of survival mode.

Other dogs are truly what fill Bandit’s emotional cup, and because of that, we strongly recommend he go to a home with another social, confident dog who can help him feel safe and show him how to just be a dog again.

Those moments are why we refuse to give up on him, but we’re scared Bandit is starting to give up on himself.

No dog deserves to spend their life in a kennel. Every day we watch him deteriorate a little more mentally. Every day he loses another piece of hope - and we don’t know how much longer it can last.

Bandit doesn’t need a hero. He needs someone patient. Someone who is willing to accept a slow burn instead of love at first sight. Someone who understands that trust is something he has to build brick by brick. Someone who can look at a traumatized dog and say, “you’re still worth fighting for.”

Because he is. He is so, SO worth trying for.
