Magnolia had a great lesson yesterday!

To those of you who have followed us, we worked with Tessa and her family when she was a pup and throughout her various life stages. NOW we are working with the same family on their second puppy, Mags almost two years later!

You don’t need hour-long training sessions to make progress. A few focused minutes each day build stronger habits, better communication, and a dog that understands what’s expected.

Consistency beats intensity every time. Small efforts, repeated daily, create big results.

Enrichment doesn’t have to be complicated

A walk in a new place, scattering their meal in the grass, working on a few minutes of training, enjoying a favorite chew, or simply stopping to sniff can all help give your dog the mental stimulation they need.

Small moments of enrichment each day can reduce boredom, build confidence, and strengthen the bond between you and your dog.

A Calm Dog Isn’t Born… It’s Taught.

One of the most overlooked skills a dog can learn is how to simply settle at home.

Too often, dogs are constantly entertained, corrected, or stimulated without ever being taught that it’s okay to relax. A dog that knows how to switch off is less likely to become anxious, destructive, or constantly seek attention.

Teaching your dog to settle doesn’t mean expecting them to sleep all day. It means helping them understand that not every moment requires action. Learning to calmly lie on a bed, enjoy their favorite chew or bone, watch the world go by, or quietly exist with the family is a valuable life skill.

Providing an appropriate chew while your dog settles can encourage relaxation, satisfy a natural need to chew, and help create positive associations with downtime in the home.

Training isn’t just about obedience commands—it’s about creating balance. A dog that can confidently work when it’s time to work and peacefully rest when it’s time to rest is a dog that is prepared for everyday life.

At Lotus K9 Academy, we believe some of the most important training happens in the quiet moments. Calmness is a skill, and like every other skill, it can be developed with consistency and clear guidance.

Pups: “How is it we keep getting the human to open the door?”

Me: *waits*

Pups: “oh yeah! We sit and stare up with cute faces!”

Am I asking them to hold the “sit” while I open the door? Not yet. Am I building to that skill? YES!

Right now all they need to know is that jumping on the door, barking, etc does NOT get the door opened for them. Even during potty sessions this is a HARD rule that must be followed.

They run out, do their potty business and because they said Texas is too dang hot right now, they run to the back door and “ask” for it to get opened by sitting. Right now, it’s just about building a list of behaviors I want to keep later. This is one that within the next few days begins to look a little different now that they have mastered this part….
We add another piece of the much bigger picture.

This is something that I never offered food for with these two. The sit was built in other areas to achieve what they wanted, sometimes involving food. BUUUTT, this one has a reward of the marker word and a release to the next door where they repeat the behavior and THEN they get to run inside and get into their crates where they find a few pieces of kibble and their chew.

8 weeks old today and they are learning together and apart. They are still getting to play and romp around during free time and SOME potty sessions but they are developing skill sets away from one another and that is incredibly important.

Boundaries begin when your dog comes home, not when they stop being cute and new.

The habits you allow today become the behaviors you live with tomorrow.

Teaching clear, fair boundaries from the very first day gives your puppy confidence, creates structure, and builds trust. Boundaries aren’t about being harsh—they’re about helping your dog understand how to succeed.

Start with consistency. Build a lifetime of success.
