I got this email today and it's not the first time I've gotten questions about this whole Vagus Nerve Hoo-ha...so we're clearing up some things that are true...and not quite so true.

I have 2 anxious dogs that, despite socializing and being friendly at the dog park, are very nervous and avoid people on the leash...They are locked in as far as obedience goes and they are the only dogs I've ever had that have been like this on the leash so I have been looking into other things to try to build their confidence with strangers but nothing seems to truly stick...Lately I have been getting ads for a "Vagus Nerve Reset" that is supposed to fix their actual anxiety instead of just controlling or stifling their outward response. I've never heard you talk about it so could you spill the beans and explain what this is? Is it just rubbing their ears or something. It seems suspicious...

Because it IS suspicious. And I LOVE that at least my clients are asking before believing. Marketing can be really slick and sexy.

Alas, your dog doesn't have a magic reset button...but it would be cool if they did and we could wipe away all the silly human mistakes we've made that help them have crazy behavior. Anyway, in this weeks Brain Work and Behavior we're clearing up some of the Vagus Nerve Hype. Link to the article in the comments.

Here was one of my Master's Final presentations for Anatomy.

"Do Dogs go through Menopause?"
"No."
The end.

I had 15 more minutes to go for the presentation so I did expand a bit.

The research question was prompted by a young guy I met while in Rattlesnake Avoidance through Positive Reinforcement methods. As we were sitting around waiting for...something...and it was taking forever...I made some wisecrack about my menopausal brain not even remember what we were waiting for.

I followed up by the all too often mumbling of "sorry - you don't need to know that stuff" apologies like men aren't effected by all the women in the world.

He quickly piped up with a comfortable and remarkably astute reflection... "you know, I was just reading an article that dog's don't go through menopause..."

And so it became my magical obsession and I dove on down that rabbit hole as one can in research.

The moral of the story is - ALWAYS, ALWAYS make menopausal related wise cracks to young men.

We have an AMAZING group of Mastery Movers who said YES to our first round of PAWS Mastery.

Not yes to MORE training, MORE reps and MORE stress. But YES to finally understanding WHY their dog does what they do - so they can be more effective at addressing the WHAT and HOW (ie the training part...)

So, if you're tired of seeing all the silly quick fix training programs that cost a LOT of money but get you very few results - check out PAWS Mastery.

Membership is still open until midnight tonight - if you're interested. Link to the webinar replay is in the comments below. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

This is just one of those "COOL A.F." moments I had to share. I ran across this picture of the canine uterine horns - did you know they have 2 and that's why they can birth so many puppies? But in real life, it doesn't look so neat and tidy (2nd pic -X ray of pregnant dog).

I'm completing a final for one of my Master's of Science courses - Canine Anatomy. It's a presentation on canine reproductive cycles - more specifically why dogs don't menstruate and do not go through menopause. Menstruation is actually rare and only occurs in some primates, a few bats, the elephant shrew and the spiny mouse.

FUN FACT: Dogs (and many animals) bleed during estrous due to an increase in blood flow and vascular "leakage". It actually signals readiness, not the beginning of a new cycle with shedding of the uterine lining like in primates.

POINDEXTER!! Thanks for listening.

Some say my dog is a princess. However, she does love to devour a delicious (peanut-pumpkin) frozen Han Solo snack. Is she of the Dark Side? The Rebllion? Hard to tell these days...
