We have an array of critters to mount in the next few weeks. Including Cape buffalo, New Zealand red stags, caribou, mountain lions, Aoudad sheep, African water buck and the usual amount of deer and elk. Shoulder is healing up and the crew is taking up the slack. But I can still point and deligate duties.

Noah Romero stopped by to pick up his lifesize badger mount last week (a few days before my shoulder surgery). A big part of the pleasures of taxidermy is dealing with my customers. The mountain lion made me do it…..do what you ask? I arrowed this mountain lion the day after Christmas 1997. While packing it out me and the mountain lion fell off a 30 foot cliff (hunting in 2 foot of snow). I crashed through a ponderosa tree, which broke my fall, and landed on my head, which is what saved me because I’m hard headed. Then it was on to the emergency room. With a score of 15 9/16 Pope and Young, it rated (at that time) as the 5th largest mountain lion ever killed. He ranked number 2 all time in Colorado. At that time only President Theodore Roosevelt killed a bigger lion. He killed it in Meeker, Colorado in 1901. In my later years the shoulder has gotten worse and worse. I haven’t been able to work out in 18 months. I lost 12-15 pounds in that time. I’m now on the road to recovery. I’ve got my employees to lean on while I assist with my left hand. Halle will be the boss for the next 2 weeks!

Bob and Patrice Clark with Patrice’s 50” Colorado moose. Patrice shot this big Shiras moose with her muzzle-loader. Bob drew the same tag this year and while out scouting a couple of weeks ago found these matched sheds. He now knows there’s another big bull running around out there. Congratulations Patrice!!!!

What a beautiful Bull Elk! This big 8X8 was taken on public land in unit 70. Pictured with me is Jay Scott who used to be an outfitter in that area……. so of course he knows all the secret spots. He guided his friend Lance Shufelberger to this majestic bull.

My good friend of over 30 years and fellow antler collector Kent Dalton of Moab, Utah has built an addition to his man-cave just to display these 4 giant elk and other mounts. His other showroom is completely full of big mule deer mounts he has purchased from me over the years……last count was about 50 shoulder mounts. These huge elk were a lot of work as they are sheds from “Ranch Bulls” and he wanted detachable antlers for each one. The artificial resin skull plates that are sold in taxidermy supply catalogs weren’t adequate enough to hold the heavy antlers. In steps Charley Every and his welder to the rescue. We were able to build a system that worked great. Kent’s son Andrew helped me hang these elk while Kent set back in a chair and admired his latest trophies. Kent also bought a grizzly bear rug from me! More spending money for me to buy more antlers I don’t need.

One of the better bucks brought in during the 2024 season. Certainly the biggest body deer we got in. Proud dad Freddie Chavez with his daughter Kendall who was just 15 years old when she shot the heavy 6X7 deer. Good job Kendall!!! It’s gonna be tough to beat this deer.
