Ever heard of the dog training bank?
This applies to any known behavior your dog has! Successful repetitions deposit five dollars, and repetitions where your dog does not complete the desired behavior takes out $20.00. This is why it is so easy to feel stuck or have a behavior break down.
To make progress in your training, it is important to set your dog up for as many successful repetitions as possible!

Do you feel like your dog knows a skill at home and then when you go anywhere else they seem like they've never heard of it?

This is a common complaint I get from clients, often labeling it as their dog being stubborn when really this is not the case at all!
There are several reasons your dog may not perform a behavior in different locations including:
1) It hasn't been generalized, they actually do need to relearn it in different environments and contexts!
2) There are distractions they haven't practiced with that are pulling their attention, start in an easier area or at a greater distance first.
3) They need more practice doing the behavior successfully and being rewarded for it.

Service dog symposium recap!! Last week we spent a few days in Ithaca, NY at the first annual Duffield Institute Service Dog Symposium. It was so inspiring to be surrounded by so many experts in the field, exciting to hear about current and upcoming research, and brought me so much excitement for current and future business endeavors for CSDT for both my owner trainers and program dogs!

Astro had his first hotel stay, did an excellent job settling at the conference with 25 other service dogs (who were all extremely impressive!!), and had lots of fun playing in the water on hikes during our down time. While we still have plenty to work on in his teenage months, I am so proud of how he handled the weekend and what an easy travel buddy he was.

It was wonderful to meet so many amazing handlers and trainers, already can’t wait for next year and grateful for the connections and knowledge built this year!

Scroll to the end to watch a very happy lab and follow along for the journey💜

I often preach to clients that it is so important to have a back up plan for days, weeks, or even months that they need extra support with their dog.

Whether this is for training help, or basic care and meeting needs, having a support system is a necessity in any dog plan- especially working dogs. Over the winter I got really sick and found myself unable to meet my dogs needs, ranging from basic care to training. I am so lucky I have such a great support system, and had a back up plan as needed, to ensure my dogs and I both got what we needed!

🐾Do you have back up support for your dogs?

⁉️What's the big deal about falsely labeling your pet as a service dog?🚨

Not only is this using someone else's disability for your convenience of having your pet, but you are harming the public access accessibility for true working teams. This can happen if your pet is disruptive in any way, you present "certification" that is not required, or if you distract or harm a working team.

This is your daily reminder that you do not need your pet in public non-pet friendly places and there is no reason to bring them!

There is no legally obligated service dog registration in the United States! If you've been swayed into registering your dog for legal or "legitamate" reasons, this is a scam.

➡️ If you would benefit from a service dog, reach out to a qualified, specialized trainer to help you navigate and educate yourself on the process and requirements!

There are so many opinions and common misconceptions about the "best" way to socialize a puppy, especially a service dog prospect.

It is important to know there is no way to guarantee any dog will be a public access fit service dog, especially not from puppyhood! The important things to focus on are:
1️⃣confidence building age appropriate socialization
2️⃣building confidence and neutrality over obedience
3️⃣tailoring outings to fit your puppy's needs
