With over 50 mares entered, we had our work cut out for us choosing the winners. The quality was deep, and we want to thank all who entered! In the end, we couldn’t choose just one mare per stallion, so we’ve selected two winners for each…plus a bonus Arabian mare to be bred to Rhys Meadows Manchester.
RHYS MEADOWS MANCHESTER CONTEST WINNER #1
Congratulations to Brandye Smith and the ethereal grey Section A Welsh Pony mare, Lochinvar Rose Queen (Lochinvar Debonair x *Bengad Rose Hip). This mare is a Multi Reserve Supreme Champion in halter and has been started in driving. She’s had two lovely fillies so far, and we can’t wait to see what she produces with Manly! Side note: Our family took a trip to Indiana a few years ago to check out a Welsh Pony show (our first). We met Brandye and some of her lovely ponies that day. She had multiple ponies that needed to be shown in the championship and needed multiple handlers. She asked me (Nikole) to show “Rosie” (her Rosie…not to be confused with our Rosie) in the championship for her, to which I happily agreed. I had everything I could do to keep up with her to show off her lovely trot! The arena was bigger than it looked!
RHYS MEADOWS MANCHESTER CONTEST WINNER #2
Congratulations to Becky Hunt and her stunning imported bay Section A Welsh Pony mare, Ceulan Howis (Weston Distinction x Ceulan Hannah). Imported by Dona Currie as a weanling, “Holly” was bred by Ceulan Stud (the oldest Welsh Pony Stud in the world). Ceulan Stud is a legendary name in Welsh ponies and was owned and developed by the late Dr. Wynne Davies and is now carried on by his son, David Davies. This mare has two exceptional filles already. This cross should be an exciting one, and we look forward to seeing your future Manly baby in harness!
RHYS MEADOWS MANCHESTER CONTEST BONUS WINNER – ARABIAN MARE
Congratulations to Thomas Clarke and his lovely bay Arabian mare, TF Kaledonia (Major Mac V x TF Kamphala). Tim is an old friend who has bred mares to Beckham two times (soon to be three) and also owns a stunning VC bred Beckham weanling! When Tim submitted his mare for either stallion, we asked him which stallion he preferred. He said when he was a kid back in the 50’s, his oldest sister always wanted a pony. His dad got her a bay Welsh/Shetland mare called Beauty (not to be confused with our Beauty) who knew every trick in the book. His dad bred her to an Arabian to produce at least 3 foals that turned out to be the children’s 4-H projects. With all those fond memories, he chose Manly. TF Kaledonia is the result of a breeding dreamed up in part by the legendary Arabian breeder, Sheila Varian, and is not only beautiful and well-bred, but also kind and sensible. What a cross this should be…and bonus…Tim is in Michigan, so we can go visit him and this baby once it’s born! We are also very excited to see what Manly will produce when crossed with a quality Arabian mare.
