🎆🎇The 4th of July is right around the corner, and with that, loud fireworks that can cause some animals stress. 🎇🎆 If your pet's anxiety spikes around the holidays, we can offer medication support. We encourage you to contact us now if you think your pet may need medication support so we can get everything in place ahead of the holiday.
⚠️Holiday Closure Notice ⚠️
We will be closed Saturday, July 4th so our team can enjoy time with their families.
🏠At-home comfort strategies🏠
-Keep pets in a quiet, interior room, ideally one with minimal windows or blackout curtains
-Allow crate-trained dogs access to their crate (covering it with a blanket can help create a sense of security); avoid crating pets who are not already comfortable in a crate
-Use background music, a TV, or white noise to help mask fireworks sounds
-Consider anxiety wraps such as Thundershirts, which can provide a calming, gentle pressure when used before fireworks begin
-Keep pets together with their household companions, but avoid introducing unfamiliar animals during this time
-Make sure collars, ID tags, and microchip information are current in case your pet becomes lost
-Stay calm and consistent; overly soothing or anxious reassurance can sometimes reinforce fearful behavior
-If possible, try not to leave pets alone during fireworks activity

Heartworm prevention isn’t seasonal. Mosquitoes can appear in unexpected weather, especially with shifting climates. Plus, missing even one dose can leave your pet unprotected.
Flea activity is also year-round; In mild climates, fleas can remain active year-round indoors. They can also enter dormancy as pupae and emerge when conditions improve. While warmer months increase activity, fleas and ticks can survive in cooler conditions and indoors year-round

We can help you choose the best prevention option for your pet’s age, weight, and lifestyle.

Plants seem harmless enough, but certain vegetation can be detrimental to your pet's health. For a full list of toxic plants, take a look at the ASPCA website https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/aspca-poison-control/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants

What clinical signs might warn me that my pet may have been poisoned?
The signs vary depending on the particular poison concerned. Toxins may produce:
• Gastrointestinal signs such as drooling, lack of appetite, vomiting and diarrhea
• Neurological signs including hiding, excitability, incoordination, tremors, seizures, lethargy or coma
• Respiratory signs such as coughing, sneezing, or difficult breathing
• Skin signs of redness, inflammation and swelling
• Liver failure that causes lack of appetite, vomiting, dehydration, jaundice, diarrhea and weight loss
• Kidney failure that may show as lack of appetite, vomiting, halitosis (bad breath), increased drinking and urination, decreased drinking and urination, and weight loss

I think my cat has been poisoned. What should I do?

If you suspect your cat may have had access to a poisonous substance, it is important to contact your veterinarian or Pet Poison Helpline or seek veterinary care as soon as possible. If the cat is anxious and aggressive, it is usually best to wrap it in a towel and put it in a box to prevent it from hurting itself or you.

Who let the dogs out?! And how can you return them home safely?
For the entire month of June, Red Hills is having a 10% discount on all microchipping services! Microchipping helps lost animals reunite with their families. While it is NOT a tracking device, it does register a unique ID number specifically for your pet. A shelter or a vet can scan this microchip and pull up information that can help them get home. If you have any questions about the microchipping process, or pricing, please reach out to us via text, call or email!

Here at Red Hills, we collaborate with Royal Canin to take care of your purrfect pals. Royal Canin is able to respect cats’ and dogs’ unique needs by providing health through precise nutrition. Not only do they have a wide variety of retail food with a quick survey to find the best recommendation for your specific pet, they also have prescription-based diets.
How does one get a prescription-based diet? Schedule an appointment with a veterinarian to discuss any concerns you may have about your pet. Blood work is a great way to see if your fuzzy friend has any conditions you may not have been privy to. Our supply of prescription food includes but is not limited to diets to help with diabetes, renal failure, digestive issues, and weight management.
Have questions? Feel free to call us at Red Hills, or visit the Royal Canin website!
