We focus primarily on saving animals from 2 high-kill shelters in rural Kentucky. Our primary business locations are in Batavia and Plainfield, IL. We do not have a shelter for viewing animals. We are 100% foster home based and schedule meet and greets with approved applications only. We also hold adoption events so please keep an eye on our page for dates and times!

Polo has been at the shelter since MAY! He is close to a year old. He is sweet and friendly. Despite growing up at the shelter he still has a smile on his face. He is about 30 # now.

Blackey is the mom of Skeeter and Brownie. Tubs is the dad. He and Skeeter have an adorable nub tail. Their 6 siblings are in foster already, 2 are with Starfish. They are about 4 months old now and around 20-25 #. All of them are dog friendly and are very gentle with kids as young as 2. They all live outside. With cold weather coming, let’s get them in a foster home.

Dunkin and Roxy were from an accidental litter earlier this spring. The mom is an Australian shepherd/beagle mix and the dad is unknown. The woman had another litter of puppies that we found rescue for. Since they were still young and fluffy, they quickly found fosters. However, Dunkin and Roxy have been overlooked. They are dog friendly and potty trained. They chase cats so they should be in a cat-free home.

Meet Happy – the 11-Month-Old Deaf Pittie with the Best Smile!

True to her name, Happy radiates joy wherever she goes. Every morning she greets her people and dog friends with the most adorable “happy dance” and shows off her signature smile, complete with a charming little underbite.

Happy adores other dogs, though she needed some time to learn how to share toys when she first arrived in her foster home. She tends to like smaller dogs or more submissive dogs best but does adapt to other dogs. She’s equally wonderful with people and would thrive in a home with older children (12+) who can understand her needs. Since she’s deaf, her foster family wakes her gently using scents—American cheese is her favorite alarm clock!

On leash, Happy surprises everyone—she’s the slowest walker you’ll ever meet. At just 11 months old, she shuffles along like a sweet senior pup with arthritis. She never pulls, though sometimes she decides she’s just not moving. What she does love, though, is soaking up the sunshine and spending hours relaxing outdoors.

Happy is a smart girl who has already learned “sit,” “come,” and “no.” Crate training has been a challenge, but she’s made huge progress. Now, she sleeps through the night peacefully and settles quickly during the day.

She’s also a total comedian. From her hilarious piggy grunts and owl-like screeches to her antics with vegetables—watching her toss broccoli and green beans around the room is guaranteed entertainment—Happy will keep you smiling every day.

Happy is ready to find her forever family: one that will appreciate her quirks, celebrate her progress, and give her the love and patience every puppy deserves.

Baxter has been in a foster home in KY for over a year and I’m not sure why. He is potty trained, crate trained, good on a leash and kid friendly. He gets along with both male and female dogs. He is already neutered and up to date on vaccines. Don’t let him be overlooked for a day longer.

The dogs at this shelter are at risk. The shelter is a small rural shelter and the animal control officers have been called to intake 23 dogs. The shelter only has about 20 kennels. You do the math. The dogs that have been at the shelter the longest (which is only a few months because they euthanize so frequently) are at risk first. That means Penelope, Ruby, Syd, and Halo are at highest risk. They are just puppies!

Rose is a sweet, calm black lab mix. She is dog and cat friendly.

Jolene, Harley, and Brutus are Australian shepherd mixes. They are living in an outdoor kennel, waiting for rescue. They are 6 months old and about 30 #.

Jasper is good with dogs, cats, and kids. He is about 3 months old.

Marsha is a 5 year old bulldog mix. She is dog and cat friendly.

Sammie is 1-2 years old and 45 #. She is crate trained and potty trained and already spayed!

Sadie is 1-2 years old and 55 #. She does better with males than females. She is spayed.

Kandace was found as a stray with her siblings. She is dog, cat, and kid friendly!

Tucker 1-2 years old and 49 #. He is neutered already and is a super friendly guy. Look at his smile when he is out of the kennel!

Pixie is a senior golden retriever given up to the shelter. She deserves a bed for her senior days, not a concrete kennel surrounded by barking dogs.

Winston, Ryker, and Finn arrived at the shelter earlier this month. They all look like sweet dogs. They can be dog tested with a committed foster!

Rosie and Tomato have been at the shelter for a month already and have been passed over by everyone.

Nash has been there since August! He is a handsome guy. He can be dog tested with a committed foster.

Kia was found on the side of a road just 8 weeks old, fending for herself.

Buttercup and Scarlett are at a shelter that will euthanize if they don’t have space for incoming dogs.

Tucker and Brock were found as strays and will only be kept until Tuesday! If we find a foster, we can get a temp foster in KY to hold them until transport.

These 4 puppies are 6 months old and 20-25 #. They are not in a good situation. The family can’t afford to feed them and is relying on donations to make sure they have food in their bellies. Can you open your home to a foster dog? The holidays are about making sure no one goes hungry…including this 4 pups!

Cole was found with his sister running the roads in KY. They were secured by Starfish volunteers. They were covered in ticks and thin. They have since been living in an outdoor kennel in a foster home together. His sister has a foster and will be getting her freedom ride. DON’T LEAVE COLE BEHIND! He is dog friendly and very sweet.

The mission of Starfish Animal Rescue is to rescue animals from high kill shelters, provide transportation of these animals to secure, non-kill establishments, to promote and facilitate responsible pet ownership, and to intervene in cases of animal cruelty. We commit to eliminating euthanasia of companion animals in North America one shelter at a time.

We are a rescue in the Chicagoland area with foster homes in many suburbs. Our primary business locations are in Batavia and Plainfield, IL.
