Can you believe there’s only two weeks left of our summer program, Students for LEAF? 🥹

July has been packed with harvesting produce for local food banks, regenerative agriculture lessons, and research supporting the Bumblebee Atlas and UC Merced. Every week, students have spent time building practical skills while contributing to projects that make a real impact.

We’re already planning for next summer and looking for new partners to help make the program even stronger. If your organization is interested in working with us, send us a DM to connect.

Students for LEAF 2027 already has a waitlist! Join it now through the link in the comments!

Come learn how to turn food scraps and yard waste into a resource for your garden!

Join us at Union City Library for Talkin' Dirt, where we'll cover the basics of backyard composting, including what to compost, how to build a healthy pile, and simple ways to create nutrient-rich compost at home. Whether you're just getting started or looking to improve your compost system, you'll leave with practical tips you can put to use right away.

These are just a few of the harvests that have made their way from the LEAF Urban Farm to our partner food banks TCV Food Bank + Mobile Pantry and Daily Bowl / Centro de Servicios of Alameda County in recent weeks.

Every harvest is planted, maintained, picked, weighed, and packed by our volunteers before it's delivered to local organizations serving our community immediately after harvesting - it doesn’t get any fresher than that! Fresh, healthy produce doesn't get where it's needed without a lot of hands behind the scenes, and we're grateful to everyone who helps make it happen.

Thank you to our volunteers for turning time in the garden into fresh food for our neighbors. 🌱💚

If you’d like to make an impact in your community, come volunteer with us! Find out more on our website (link in the comments)

It's been some time in the making, but our mural classroom is almost ready — it just needs your help finishing the design! Join our resident artist and soil scientist, Zoe Caron, as we finish the soil food web mural she started with us last year.

Zoe has designed this mural to be a paint-by-numbers canvas, so anyone can join our project! All ages and skill levels are welcome–no prior artistic experience necessary!

Three weeks of Students for LEAF are in the books! 🌱

Our 17 students have been busy learning by doing. Over the past three weeks, we've harvested potatoes, explored photography and short-form video storytelling, learned about composting with Johnson-Su bioreactors, made elderberry jam, baked pizzas and cupcakes using solar cookers, and even caught bumblebees to contribute to ongoing conservation research.

Every week brings new skills, new experiences, and new connections. We can't wait to see what the rest of the summer has in store.

Last year, Ambassador Girl Scout Aditi Sreeram dedicated her Gold Award to helping to build a native hedgerow at the LEAF Urban Farm, working with our volunteer Phil Stob. LEAF’s hedgerow featured a habitat of California native shrubs and plants for wildlife, including birds and a variety of pollinator insects such as bees and butterflies. It would also serve as a screen in front of the perimeter fence.

Habitat loss, pollution, and the replacement of native plants with non-native species have led to a serious decline in biodiversity across California. Without healthy ecosystems, CO2 levels rise and pollinators like bees and butterflies struggle to survive, threatening both our environment and food supply… By planting native species, Aditi helped create a reliable habitat where pollinators can thrive and ecosystems can begin to recover.

Projects like this help make spaces like LEAF and other community gardens more sustainable. They also serve as educational tools, teaching visitors the importance of native species and showing how they can incorporate native plants into their own gardens.
