Join us for some summer fun and volunteering at the LEAF Community Garden!

School is finally out so let's celebrate together! We'll be getting our hands dirty with composting and companion planting cherry tomatoes.

This is an educational volunteer day where we will be learning about the science behind composting and diversifying our garden. Stick around afterwards for salad and refreshments, courtesy of Youth for Good!

If you’ve ever been to our LEAF Urban Farm, then you might have noticed one of the factors that make us truly urban: our close proximity to the railways.

For the last few months, we’ve been supporting West Coast Railroad Cameras ( ), a student project focused on making trainspotting available online. They set up their first camera station, the Niles Junction Railcam, by attaching it to a palm tree at our farm. It overlooks Niles Junction and livestreams the UP Oakland Sub, UP Warm Springs Sub, and UP Niles Sub (train-speak, anyone?) on YouTube.

When you can’t make it trackside, tune in instead. 🚂 You can find the link to watch the livestream and to learn more about West Coast Railcams and their projects in our linktree.

On Saturday we are working on our latest hugelmound and exploring simple irrigation techniques using irrigation lines and ollas to support healthy plant growth. Ollas, unglazed clay pots that have been used for centuries in gardens, help reduce water loss by slowly releasing moisture underground when buried with only their necks exposed.

In this workshop, we will combine two low-tech gardening methods to create a water-efficient, low-maintenance growing system ideal for small spaces or raised beds. You will also learn practical approaches to soil improvement as we discuss hugelkulture, or the process of layering organic materials to create beneficial compost in raised beds.
