The mission of The Heartwood Seed Project is to nurture faith and community around the shared mission of caring for creation and growing fresh produce for our local food bank to extend equitable access to fresh food in the Fredericksburg/Stafford region.

What a powerful day at the Heartwood Seed Project.

Despite the scorching heat, more than a dozen incredible volunteers came together with servant hearts and willing hands to move this mission forward. Together, we installed a lower fence to help protect the garden from wildlife, harvested more strawberries — bringing our season total to 20 quarts — and laid out rows for this year’s fruits and vegetables. Today we planted tomatoes, peppers, squash, zucchini, watermelons, and cantaloupe.

Our amazing crew also finished trenching around the concrete building pad, tackling hard work with determination and joy.

Days like this remind us that the Heartwood Seed Project is about more than growing food — it’s about growing community, purpose, and hope. Thank you to every volunteer who showed up, worked hard, and put their hands in the dirt and their hearts into the mission. 🌱❤️

🚜 Installing drainage pipe

🌱 Preparing the land for an abundant growing season ahead

Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just willing to lend a hand, there’s a place for everyone! Come for an hour or stay all morning—every helping hand makes a difference.

Something deeply beautiful is unfolding at the Heartwood seed project 🌱

The berry bushes aren’t just growing—they’re responding. Strawberries and blueberries are quietly setting fruit, while blackberries and raspberries are erupting in blooms, each flower a small promise of what’s to come. It feels less like a garden and more like a conversation between land and season.

This rain hasn’t slowed things down—it’s awakened them. You can see it in the deeper greens, the soft urgency of blossoms opening, the way everything seems to be leaning into life at once.

There’s a kind of wisdom here: growth comes from steady nourishment, patience, and trust in the process.

Right now, everything is saying yes to becoming. 🍓💧
And soon, that quiet yes will turn into abundance.

There’s something special about mornings at the Heartwood Seed Project—sun shining, a gentle breeze, and new life all around. Today, our strawberry plants and blueberry bushes decided to put on quite a show, blooming beautifully and soaking in this stretch of warm, spring weather.

With higher-than-average temperatures in the forecast, we made sure to give everything a deep, refreshing watering early this morning—helping these young plants stay strong, hydrated, and ready to flourish in the days ahead.

Moments like this remind us that growth takes intention. A little extra care today helps ensure a fruitful tomorrow.

We’re grateful for the progress already happening this season and excited for what’s still to come. If you’ve been part of the journey—thank you. If you haven’t yet, there’s still plenty of time to get your hands in the soil with us!

What a day at Heartwood Seed Project! 🌱💪

A HUGE thank you to our mighty crew of volunteers who showed up, bundled up, and got things done! You all turned a chilly day into a warm reminder of what community looks like.

Our team:
🔹 Spread mountains (yes, actual mountains) of woodchips between the berry bushes to keep those unruly weeds in check.
🔹 Tucked our blueberry bushes in with fresh pine straw—because even blueberries deserve a cozy winter blanket. 🫐✨
🔹 Picked a few late-season strawberries too. And let me tell you… those strawberries were sweeter than a Southern grandma’s “Bless your heart.” 🍓😉
🔹 Plowed and tilled the vegetable garden plot so it’s ready for a glorious spring comeback.
🔹 And then marched to the Northern Field like a noble farming fellowship to prepare the soil for future fruit trees. Spring 2026 is going to be delicious. 🌳🍑🍎

Thank you, friends, for your hard work, laughter, and willingness to move more woodchips than any human reasonably should. Heartwood is growing beautifully because of you! 🌿💚

• Adding pine mulch around the blueberries
• Spreading wood chips between the berry rows to cut down on weeds
• (And if we have a solid crew…) Clearing a few trees as we expand into the Northern field 🌳

What to Bring:
🧤 Work gloves
🛒 Wheelbarrow & pitchfork (if you have them)
🪚 Chainsaw (optional—but super helpful for tree work!)
