Yesterday we had our linear appraisal session. Thank you to Salt River Run Nigerian Dwarf Dairy Goats for hosting. It was very educational and made us pretty proud of our herd. I didn’t take many pics but got a few of the girl’s udders that scored E in mammary before they were milked out.

Today is a day we have been dreading for quite a while but we were forced to make the most difficult decision as pet owners. Benson was miserable and we knew it was time to let him go when he no longer was eager to eat and was sleeping more and having a hard time getting up. So, today, Benson went on to play with his buddies, Ayla and Duke. He was the absolute best LGD and has trained every other LGD we’ve had. He took his job very seriously and would protect the flock, the herd or his people with his life. He also enjoyed some occasional shenanigans, such as rolling pumpkins off the porch and down the yard just because he could. We will be forever grateful for his protection over our farm. There will never be another like him.

Also today, we said goodbye to Prissy, who came to live with us a year ago. She belonged to Mack’s mom who had passed and we ended up bringing Prissy here as she was aging and getting harder to care for. Her name was very fitting! She was sassy and lived over 20 years! She will also be missed terribly.

This past weekend we spent showing at the SWODGA show in Hillsboro, OH. Thank you to the judges and everyone that helped put this show on. We really enjoy showing here and look forward to coming back next year. Unfortunately, due to certificates being held up by ADGA, several of our senior does we brought were unable to be shown on Sunday. We had several of our goats place at or near the top of their classes. The biggest achievement was Old Mountain Farm Royal Mead *B, who went Reserve Grand Champion in ring 2. We have one more show coming up soon, and then it’ll be time to get ready for LA in a couple of weeks!

We said goodbye to sweet Ayla today. She was two months from being 14 years old. She had a long, wonderful life watching out for the goats and lounging in the sun with the kids in her older days. She’s definitely going to be missed but I feel certain Duke was waiting for her to run off somewhere. 😔
