As a pet owner, one of the worst things is to find a tick on your pet. Not only do you have to remove the tick, but then there is the worry that your pet could have contracted a disease from the tick bite. Prevention of tick bites can be done with a topical or oral medication monthly, BUT NOW there is a new injectable tick and flea prevention offered by Merck Animal Health.

Tick Awareness and Yearly Prevention Option

In the midst of summer fun and enjoying time outside with our pets, we have to remember the troublesome ticks that are prominent this time of year. Ticks wait for your dog on the tips of grasses and shrubs. When a dog brushes the plant, the tick quickly lets go of the plant and climbs onto your pet. Ticks are efficient carriers of disease because they attach firmly when sucking blood, feed slowly, and may go unseen for a long time while feeding. Although there are at least 15 species of ticks in North America, only a few of these species are likely to be encountered by your dog. They include American Dog Tick, Lone Star Tick, Deer or Black-legged Tick, and Brown Dog Tick. Some diseases that your pet can contract from a tick bite include Lyme Disease, Canine Ehrlichiosis, Canine Babesiosis, and Rocky Spotted Mountain Fever. Symptoms of tick borne illnesses include fever, lethargy, swollen joints, lameness, and loss of appetite. Treatment includes antibiotics and supportive care. Ticks can cause chronic issues also in dogs.

While checking your dog daily for ticks is important, year-round PREVENTION is the best protection. Coming up on July 21st, Frankfort Animal Hospital will be hosting QUANTUM LEAP DAY. Brevecto Quantum is an injection that protects against fleas and ticks for 12 months straight. On July 21st, the first 20 clients to receive an injection will get a $25 rebate slip along with a cool purple Bravecto Quantum bandana for their dog. Spots are limited and a dog must have had an exam at Frankfort Animal Hospital in the past 6 months.

Wednesday Wisdom from FAH
As we head into the 4th of July weekend celebrations, please remember fireworks can be a big source of anxiety and fear for many of your pets.
Here are a few tips to keep your pets safe!
• Keep your pets indoors during the 4th of July weekend.
• Close the curtains/blinds and turn on the TV or radio to provide some white noise.
• Provide treat toys, such as KONG’s filled with their favorite food, to help keep them distracted them from the fireworks.
• Provide a quiet and safe place, such as a carrier or crate, which may give your pet a sense of security and comfort. Keep familiar items in their area like a toy or blanket.
• If you must go outside with your pet, use a leash or carrier to keep them from running off which is a common reaction to stress and fear.
• Keep pets away from matches, open fires, and fireworks.
• To prevent accidents, take your pet for a walk before the fireworks begin. They may be too scared to go out once the fireworks are going off.
• Make sure your pet’s ID/Microchip is current. Your pets should always have proper identification tags with current information in case they get lost.
• For pets with severe anxiety, consult your veterinarian. They may recommend anti-anxiety medications or other treatments to help your pet cope with the stress of fireworks.
