Official American Paint Horse Association Official account of the American Paint Horse Association | Marked For Greatness✨

Beginning with approximately 3,800 horses in the registry, over 1 million Paints are registered with the Association today. APHA ranks second in the number of horses registered annually in the United States, making it one of the largest horse breeds in the world. Although the APHA's primary mission is to record pedigrees, the association is dedicated to preserving and promoting the history, breedi

ng, training, racing, showing, sales and enjoyment of American Paint Horses. More importantly, the heart of the APHA lies in its members, which is why the association strives to develop and sponsor programs that reflect their interests and their love of the American Paint Horse. The APHA's goal is to encourage American Paint Horse owners to find fulfillment with their horses in whatever activities they find most enjoyable, and to give members the opportunity to share in the pleasure of Paint Horses.

It is with deep sincerity that we share the passing of APHA Hall of Fame inductee Harvey Jones of Cabool, Missouri, at the age of 86.

A well-known California horse trainer, Harvey combined forces with wife Linda in 1973, creating a small-but-mighty breeding and training operation in Turlock. With four horse-obsessed daughters in tow, the family hauled up and down the West Coast and beyond, immersing themselves in the APHA community.

Harvey wore many hats during his lifetime, daughter Diane Alves says. As a horseman, those hats included breeder, halter horse and all-around trainer, judge, regional club founder, APHA state director, and APHA Executive Committee member. He showed five Paints to Supreme Championship titles: Cherokee War Chief, Lady Bar Flit, Silly Filly, J Bars Lady Bug and Lucky Straw. In 2015, Harvey and Linda (pictured above) were inducted into the APHA Hall of Fame.

The couple retired from active equine participation in 2015, but an appreciation for horses remained. They moved from California to Missouri, and in recent years, Harvey enjoyed maintaining their 10-acre paradise and feeding the demanding wild birds.

“He was truly a representative of integrity, dedication and old school values—always there to encourage and help others at horse shows and remembered for his contagious laugh and smile. His love of family, horses and dogs will forever keep him in the memories of many whose lives he touched,” Diane said. “Harvey not only taught me everything I know about horses but, more importantly, he taught me the critical lessons in life. It’s not just about winning—it’s about doing the right thing and respecting people along the way. He was forever supportive of my leadership journey with APHA when in reality, I was only following in his footsteps.”

Harvey is survived by his wife, Linda; daughter Tracy Delphia; daughter Diane Alves and husband Brian; daughter Robin Lewis and husband Alan; daughter Wendy Miller and husband John; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Our Story

The American Paint Horse Association promotes, preserves and provides meaningful experiences with Paint Horses.

“When I look at my Paint Horse, I see the colorful legacy of his past. With a personality and independent spirit so powerful, it bubbled to the surface in a wild series of beautiful markings. Each one a gifted heirloom from his ancestors; showing me just where he’d been, but never revealing quite where we are going.

Greatness doesn’t fit in a mold; it doesn’t follow a trend. It defies it, holding fast to who it was meant to be. Greatness is not simply for the chosen few but instead for those brave enough to seize it. The moment I saw this horse, I knew he was clearly never meant to shy in the shadows, he defiantly stood like a beacon of individuality with crooked and winding chrome almost glowing through his skin.”
