How to Keep Your French Bulldog Safe in Hot Weather β˜€οΈπŸΎ

Summer can be one of the most enjoyable times of the year, but for French Bulldogs, it can also be one of the most dangerous.

Unlike many other breeds, Frenchies are brachycephalic dogs, meaning they have short muzzles and narrow airways. While their adorable faces make them famous around the world, those same features make it much harder for them to cool themselves during hot weather.

A temperature that feels comfortable to you may already be putting your Frenchie at risk.

Here are twelve important ways to help keep your little companion safe all summer long.

1. Walk During Cooler Hours

The safest times for walks are early in the morning and later in the evening.

Avoid midday walks whenever possible, especially during heat waves.

2. Test the Pavement

Asphalt can become extremely hot under direct sunlight.

Before every walk, place the back of your hand on the pavement for five to seven seconds. If it is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for your Frenchie's paws.

3. Monitor Indoor Temperatures

French Bulldogs are indoor dogs during hot weather.

Try to keep your home around 75Β°F to 79Β°F (24Β°C to 26Β°C) and avoid large temperature spikes throughout the day.

4. Keep Air Conditioning Running

Even when you leave the house, make sure your Frenchie has access to a cool room.

Heat can build surprisingly fast indoors.

5. Always Provide Fresh Water

Hydration is critical during summer months.

Keep multiple water bowls available and replace the water frequently so it stays cool and clean.

6. Watch Humidity Levels

High humidity can be just as dangerous as high temperatures.

French Bulldogs rely heavily on panting to cool themselves, and humidity makes that process far less effective.

7. Improve Air Circulation

Fans, open windows, and proper ventilation help create a more comfortable environment for your dog.

Fresh airflow can make a significant difference on warm days.

8. Brush Regularly

Brushing removes loose fur, dirt, and debris while helping air reach the skin more effectively.

A well maintained coat helps regulate body temperature.

9. Provide Cooling Options

Cooling mats, damp towels, shaded areas, and cool floors can help your Frenchie regulate their body temperature naturally.

Many Frenchies quickly learn to seek out these cool spots during hot weather.

10. Never Leave Your Frenchie in a Car

Even for a few minutes.

Vehicle temperatures can climb to deadly levels very quickly, even when the outside temperature seems mild.

If your Frenchie cannot come inside with you, they should stay home.

11. Use Cooling Products

Cooling vests, cooling bandanas, cooling mats, and portable fans can provide additional protection during hot days.

These products can be especially useful during travel or outdoor activities.

12. Learn the Signs of Heatstroke

Heatstroke is a medical emergency.

Watch for:

β€’ Excessive panting
β€’ Heavy drooling
β€’ Weakness or lethargy
β€’ Vomiting
β€’ Lack of appetite
β€’ Confusion or disorientation
β€’ Collapse

If you notice these symptoms, move your Frenchie to a cool area immediately and contact a veterinarian without delay.

Your Frenchie Depends on You

French Bulldogs trust us completely to keep them safe.

They do not understand why the pavement is burning hot or why the sun feels dangerous. They simply want to be with the people they love.

A little preparation can prevent serious health problems and help your Frenchie enjoy a safe, comfortable, and happy summer.

Keep them cool.

Keep them hydrated.

And give those adorable bat ears an extra scratch from all of us. β€οΈπŸΎβ˜€οΈ
