What great news!

The European Advisory Board on Cat Diseases has just updated their FIP treatment guidelines, three years after the last revision.

𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀:

• Antiviral response is rapid, with clinical improvement often seen within days—and 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝘁𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘀.

• 𝗢𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗚𝗦-𝟰𝟰𝟭𝟱𝟮𝟰 is the preferred first-line treatment.

• Standard dosing is 𝟭𝟱 𝗺𝗴/𝗸𝗴 once daily, effective in most cats—not only in effusive cases but across all manifestations of FIP. Some use higher dosages for cats with ocular and/or neurological signs.

• 𝟰𝟮-𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗰𝗼𝗹𝘀 can be as effective as 84 days in many cases.

• Adverse effects are usually mild (ALT elevation, GI signs), but rare complications such as large cell lymphoma and urolithiasis have been reported.

• Concurrent conditions (e.g., 𝐈𝐌𝐇𝐀, 𝐦𝐲𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐬) are increasingly recognized and may require additional therapy.

• Prognostic indicators are becoming more defined—high bilirubin and hypoglycemia are negative indicators, while 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝟰𝟴 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲.

• Monitoring remains essential—weight, clinical response, and laboratory trends guide treatment, and early fluctuations do not always indicate failure. A drop in body weight, a transient increase in globulins, and a decrease in PCV can occur as effusions resolve around two weeks into treatment.

𝗙𝗜𝗣 𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗱, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘀. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮 𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗲 𝗳𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗳𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝗻. 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗲’𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗳𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗲.

Please for the love of everything. Do not just take kittens you find the second you find them. Keep an eye out for a few hours on their condition! Tok may of these babies end up dying because
#1 bottle feeders are limited
#2 may of them don’t do well with a bottle
Read the facts. Spay and neuter your neighborhood spays

🐾 Found Kittens Outside? Please Don’t “Kitten-nap.”

Whenever possible, kittens should stay with their mother until they are about 5–6 weeks old.

During those early weeks, Mom provides the best nutrition, warmth, protection, and survival skills kittens need.

At 5–6 weeks of age, kittens can safely begin the next step:
✔️ Rescue and socialization
✔️ Veterinary care and vaccinations
✔️ Preparation for adoption

At the same time, Mom Cat should be spayed so the cycle of breeding ends.

• If Mom is friendly, she may be able to transition indoors.
• If she is feral, Trap–Neuter–Return (TNR) is the kindest option.

📊 How do you know if kittens need help?

✅ If they’re in a cuddle puddle and quiet — they’re likely fine.
✅ If they’re round and well-fed — they’re likely fine.

🚩 Kittens may need help if:

❌ They are skinny and screaming constantly
❌ They have crusty or infected eyes
❌ They are in a dangerous location

If kittens are in danger, move them to a nearby safe location and watch from a distance.

A helpful trick: play “kittens calling mama cat” on your phone and observe from afar. Many times, Mom will come running to retrieve her babies.
