Whenever possible, kittens should stay with their mother until they are about 5โ6 weeks old.
During those early weeks, Mom provides the best nutrition, warmth, protection, and survival skills kittens need.
At 5โ6 weeks of age, kittens can safely begin the next step:
โ๏ธ Rescue and socialization
โ๏ธ Veterinary care and vaccinations
โ๏ธ Preparation for adoption
At the same time, Mom Cat should be spayed so the cycle of breeding ends.
โข If Mom is friendly, she may be able to transition indoors.
โข If she is feral, TrapโNeuterโReturn (TNR) is the kindest option.
๐ How do you know if kittens need help?
โ
If theyโre in a cuddle puddle and quiet โ theyโre likely fine.
โ
If theyโre round and well-fed โ theyโre likely fine.
๐ฉ Kittens may need help if:
โ They are skinny and screaming constantly
โ They have crusty or infected eyes
โ They are in a dangerous location
If kittens are in danger, move them to a nearby safe location and watch from a distance.
A helpful trick: play โkittens calling mama catโ on your phone and observe from afar. Many times, Mom will come running to retrieve her babies.
๐ Removing healthy neonatal kittens from their mother lowers their chances of survival.
