Winter weather warning!!
To prepare animals for winter, keep pets indoors as much as possible, provide dry, insulated shelter for outdoor animals, ensure unfrozen food and water, protect paws from salt/ice with booties or balm, use pet-safe de-icers, and have an emergency kit ready, including supplies for potential power outages, while being aware of dangers like antifreeze and cold cars.
For Indoor Pets (Dogs & Cats)
Limit Outdoor Time: Keep walks short, especially in extreme cold, as pets risk frostbite and hypothermia.
Protect Paws: Wipe paws after walks to remove salt/chemicals; use booties or paw balm for protection.
Warmth & Grooming: Use sweaters/coats for short-haired breeds; don't shave long-haired pets down to the skin, just trim to prevent ice balls.
Emergency Kit: Prepare food, water, medications, and copies of records in case of a power outage.
Vehicle Safety: Bang on your car hood before starting to scare away cats seeking warmth.
For Outdoor Pets & Livestock
Shelter: Provide a sturdy, waterproof shelter raised off the ground, with an entrance facing away from the wind.
Bedding: Use straw or cedar shavings (not hay or blankets, which absorb moisture and freeze).
Water: Use heated bowls to prevent freezing; ensure access isn't blocked by snow.
Food: Ensure adequate high-energy food, as animals burn more calories staying warm.
Windbreaks: Use solid-sided wagons or plywood to block wind for livestock.
General & Safety Precautions
Antifreeze: It's highly toxic; store out of reach and clean up spills immediately.
Identification: Keep ID tags and microchips updated in case pets get lost in snow/storms.
Hypothermia Signs: Watch for whining, shivering, weakness, or anxiety, and get them inside quickly.
