Ganon first stepped through our doors on April 8, 2022.

More than four years later, he is still waiting.

But there is another part of Ganon’s story that we really need people to understand.

Ganon is heartworm positive.

We have been trying to get this sweet boy heartworm negative for what feels like forever, but heartworm treatment takes time. And for Ganon, there has been one major piece missing:

A foster home.

We are excited to now be able to move forward with Immiticide treatment for his heartworms, but in order for us to begin, Ganon needs to be in a foster home.

That means someone opening their home could do so much more than give Ganon a break from the shelter.

A foster could help us finally get him heartworm negative.

And Ganon really is such an easy boy to love.

He gets along wonderfully with other dogs, and one of his absolute favorite things to do is climb up on the picnic table, stretch out, and sunbathe. Give him a warm spot in the sunshine and he is perfectly content just soaking it all in.

He has been in foster homes before, so he knows what it feels like to be part of a family. He is sweet, loving, and truly deserves the chance to feel that again.

After more than four years, we want nothing more than to see Ganon healthy, heartworm negative, and one step closer to the future he has waited so long for.

We will provide his medical care. What we need is a home.

Please share Ganon. Tag someone who has talked about fostering. Send this to the friend who loves dogs and has room for one more.

Even if you cannot foster him yourself, sharing his story could put him in front of the person who can.

A little over a year ago, on August 24, 2025, tiny Harp walked out of our shelter and into a whole new world, and what a world it has been!

Since adoption day, Harp has been busy exploring new places, making memories, soaking up all the love, and discovering just how exciting life can be with a family by her side. Seeing our former shelter pets out living their best lives is one of our favorite things.

Happy National Dog Day!

Celebrated every year on August 26, National Dog Day was founded in 2004 by animal advocate Colleen Paige to honor dogs of all breeds and backgrounds while bringing attention to the many dogs in shelters and rescues still waiting for homes. The date holds special meaning because August 26 was the day her family adopted her first dog from a local animal shelter when she was 10 years old.

National Dog Day celebrates everything dogs bring into our lives, companionship, loyalty, comfort, protection, and unconditional love. It also recognizes the incredible work dogs do every day, from service and therapy work to law enforcement, search and rescue, and so much more.

Here at Nassau County Animal Services, today is especially meaningful because we get to celebrate all of the wonderful dogs in our care. Every one of them has their own personality, story, and something special to offer the family who chooses them.

And this August, there’s an even bigger reason to consider adoption: ALL adoptions at Nassau County Animal Services are sponsored for the entire month of August as part of Clear The Shelters!

NBCUniversal Local is teaming up with hundreds of shelters across the country for Clear The Shelters 2026, a nationwide pet adoption and donation campaign helping animals in need find loving homes. Since the campaign began in 2015, more than 1 million pets have found their forever homes.

This National Dog Day, celebrate by adopting, fostering, sharing our available dogs, or simply helping spread the word. Every little bit of support helps give shelter dogs more opportunities to be seen, loved, and welcomed into a home of their own.
