Most dog harness problems aren’t the harness…
It’s the fit.

Too tight → rubbing, discomfort, restricted movement
Too loose → slipping out when it matters most

The difference comes down to 2 simple things most owners skip:

✔️ Measure your dog’s chest at the widest part
✔️ Follow the 2-finger rule (you should fit 2 fingers under every strap)

That’s what turns a stressful walk into a controlled, comfortable one.
Be honest,Did you measure your dog’s harness… or just eyeball it?

I’ve seen mixed opinions on this, so I’m curious where people land:
Do you think backpacks or carriers are actually safer for dogs?

At first I assumed carriers were safer since the dog isn’t doing any work, But after using both... I’m not so sure.

Carriers put all the responsibility on you (balance, support, positioning), while backpacks shift some of that load to the dog (which can be good or bad).

Feels like one isn’t automatically safer than the other… just different tradeoffs.
Interested to hear real experiences.

Have you had better outcomes with one over the other?

When we first started using a dog backpack, we assumed if they kept walking, everything was fine. Looking back, the signs were there... just subtle.

-Slowing down more than usual
-Taking more breaks
-Less excited on the trail

Nothing dramatic, just small changes over time.

It made us realize dogs don’t always clearly show when something’s off, they’ll often just push through.

If you’re hiking with your dog and using a backpack, it’s worth paying attention to the little things.

Have you ever noticed this?

We broke this down more in detail here if you want to dive deeper:

Something I didn’t think about at first with dog backpacks:
How do you actually know if your dog is carrying too much weight?

We started light and gradually increased, but there’s no clear “line” where it’s obvious you’ve gone too far.

Our dog didn’t complain or stop… but looking back, there were small signs:
Slower pace
More breaks
Less excitement on the trail

Nothing dramatic, just subtle changes.
Made me realize they’ll often push through instead of signaling clearly.

For those of you who use dog backpacks regularly:
How do you personally judge what’s “too much” for your dog?

Do you go by body weight %, behavior, or just experience over time?

Backpack's or Carriers?
Most people assume there’s a “right” answer here.
We did too at first.

But after actually using both on different hikes, it’s not that simple.

Some trails → a backpack makes more sense
Some situations → a carrier is way easier

And honestly… some dogs clearly prefer one over the other.
Curious what you’ve found. Do you stick with one, or switch depending on the hike?
