The Civic Department of the Women's Club of Fall River had taken note of the plight of draft animals and began to wonder about the organization to care for them. After much discussion, the decision was made that the City needed a humane organization. A committee was formed and after much hard work and the recruitment of eleven members, the firs

t meeting was held in the parish house of the First Congregational Church in October, 1913. Plans were made and fund-raising began in earnest. The donations poured in and an old bam was purchased at 474 Durfee Street. An aging horse was donated, along with a blanket and wagon, and the stipulation that he be given care for the rest of his life. And with that beginning, the doors first opened on February 11, 1914 (incorporation came on June 25, 1914). In 1917, funds were donated to purchase the adjoining property, at which point runs and cages were added for small animals. The following Annual Report of April 15, 1926 captures the flavor of our early days: "Christmas dinners for horses were distributed as usual. ... bags of apples, grain and carrots to 80 horses who were found in the City and outlying districts that enjoyed a good dinner on Christmas Day thanks to the friends who contributed money and the ingredients for the dinners. Any balance Ieft after the expense of this annual event went into the fund for buying old and worn out not fit for use horses. The League is offering several prizes to the Girl Scouts for the best essays written on either of the two subjects 'Why We Love Dogs· or ·Some Pets of Famous Men·. The League has handled a very large number of dogs this year. Many are given up by owners to be humanely disposed of but the majority are vagrant and homeless dogs, strays picked up hungry and homeless, very often injured and dying in the City streets, often with collars but no name or license number to identify them. The automobile took its daily toll as well. The dogs at the shelter were made most comfortable this cold severe winter by the addition of nine storm windows on the dog kennels. When the League is called on for help, the question "Who will pay? is never asked. Animals First is our motto, and the compensation a secondary matter. And so, under modern and improved conditions the League enters upon the 14th year of service."

✨🐱Kitty of the week: Meet Billy!

Billy is a sweet and mellow 5 year old boy looking for his forever home!

This laid-back guy loves lounging on his bed, rolling onto his back for belly rubs, gazing out the window to watch the world go by, and being near his favorite people. While he’s an independent soul, he also enjoys having company close by and will happily share his space with you.❤️🐱

Billy was adopted from us a couple of years ago but was recently returned, through no fault of his own. He’s an easygoing cat who appreciates the quiet life and seems to get along well with other cats (we’re not quite sure how he’d do with children).

Neutered, up to date on vaccinations, and ready to go, Billy is just missing one thing: a loving home to call his own. His adoption fee is $250.🏡❤️✨

✨🐶Pup of the Week: Meet Gypsy!

This sweet girl has quite the story… and now she’s ready for her happily ever after! 🏡❤️

Gypsy first came to us years ago and was adopted into a loving home. But when her owners grew older and could no longer care for her, she was brought to another shelter and eventually made her way back to us. Since then, she’s been adopted twice and returned (through no fault of her own), and now she’s waiting oh so patiently for the right family to come along.

At 4 years old, Gypsy is smart, loving, and playful. She knows her commands (sit, lay down, paw), is fully potty trained, walks well on a leash, and is spayed and up to date on her vaccinations.

Gypsy would thrive in a home with no other pets, she just wants to be the center of your world! 🥰 We’re not sure how she is with kids, but with her sweet personality, we think she’d do great in an active family.

The adoption fee is $450.

After all the changes she’s been through, Gypsy truly deserves a nice place to land and a family to love her forever. Could that be you?

✨🐱 Kitty(s) of the Week: Meet Our FIV+ Sweethearts 💞

This week, we’re featuring not one, not two, but three incredible cats who all happen to be FIV+, a condition that may scare some off, but shouldn't! These kitties are loving, cuddly, and ready for forever homes.

✨ What is FIV?
Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) sounds scary, but it’s not a death sentence. FIV+ cats can live long, healthy lives with just a little extra care. It's mainly transmitted through deep bite wounds, so FIV+ cats can live peacefully with other friendly cats. It’s rare to find two FIV+ cats who genuinely love each other, but that’s exactly what we have here!

🐾 Meet Our FIV+ Friends 🐾

🐱 Tommy – 2 Years Old
Tommy is a super sweet, chill cuddle bug who loves to lounge and be by your side. He’s neutered, vaccinated, and ready to snuggle his way into your heart. He adores Binx and they’ve formed a true bond and would thrive if adopted together. Tommy is a perfect fit for families looking for a laid-back, affectionate companion.

🐱 Binx – 2 Years Old
A bit shy at first, Binx is a gentle soul who blossoms once he feels safe. He’s neutered, vaccinated, and incredibly sweet once he opens up. Binx and Tommy are a purrfect pair and it’s rare to see two bonded FIV+ cats, and we’d love to see them stay together. Binx would do best with an experienced owner who understands shy kitties.

🐱 Merlin – 4 Years Old
Sweet, a little chunky, and totally lovable, Merlin is a lap cat in the making. He’s fixed, vaccinated, and enjoys lazy days full of pets and naps. While we’re unsure how he does with other cats, he’s a great solo companion who just wants a cozy place to call home.

FIV+ cats deserve love too. They just need a little understanding and a whole lot of heart. Whether you're looking for a pair of best buds like Tommy and Binx or a solo snuggler like Merlin, we have a cat who’s ready to complete your home. 🏡💙

✨🐶Pup(s) of the Week: Birthday Edition! 🎂

This week, we're highlighting not just one, but three special pups who all recently celebrated their 1st birthdays in the shelter. 💔

No animal should spend their birthday without a home, and these sweet dogs have waited far too long. Each one is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, and ready to find their forever family.

🐾 Meet the Birthday Trio 🐾

🐶 Gio – Lab Mix
This sweet and active boy just turned 1 and is always up for an adventure! Gio loves walks, fetch, and being by your side. He thrives with attention and would be a great fit for an active, young family. Gio is very smart, listens well, and would excel with some training. He does jump when excited, so a little caution around small children is needed, but he’s eager to learn and full of love.

🐺 Orion – Husky Mix
Turning 1 this Friday, Orion has spent 89 days in our shelter, and that’s not counting his time at the shelter before ours. This boy is growing restless and needs more than we can give him. Orion is a true rescue, found on the streets, and shelter life has left him overstimulated, mouthy, and needing direction. He is incredibly smart and breed-typical. He needs a job, structure, and someone who believes in him. Orion is for a dedicated adopter ready to rescue a rescue.

🐕 Remi – Chihuahua Mix
This pint sized pup just turned 1 and is a ball of energy! Remi is playful, fun, and loves playing with toys (any kind will do!) and playing fetch. He’s speedy and silly, sometimes making you chase him for fun. Remi would be a perfect fit for a young family looking for a dog that can keep up with their energy and bring joy to their home.

Let’s make sure these sweet pups never spend another birthday in a kennel. They’ve waited long enough, now it’s time for love, play, and forever homes. 🏡❤️

📍 Come meet them at the shelter, Monday through Saturday, 10 AM to 4PM, or message us to learn more!
