“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free…”—Emma Lazarus, The New Colossus
Today, those words echo far beyond the harbor.
They remind us that compassion is measured not by who is easiest to love, but by who needs us most.
At This Old Horse, they arrive in trailers instead of ships. The tired. The worn. The overlooked. Those looking for a new opportunity.
The old campaigners whose racing days are long behind them. The broodmares whose years of giving have quietly come to an end. The workhorses with aching bodies. The neglected. The abandoned. The frightened. The ones who have nowhere else to go.
They come carrying stories we will never fully know.
Our promise is simple: that their next chapter will not be written by what they have endured, but by what they have finally found.
A quiet life, compassionate care, the dignity of growing old in peace.
Freedom is not always a grand declaration.
Sometimes it is simply the absence of fear.
Sometimes it is a horse lowering its head to graze without hunger, lifting it without anxiety, and closing its eyes knowing it is finally home.
This Independence Day, we are grateful for the freedom to choose compassion, to welcome the weary, and to believe that every life still has value—no matter its age, ability, or past.
To everyone who helps us open that gate and say, “You are safe now.”
Thank you.
Happy Independence Day from all of us at This Old Horse.
Love is good.
