Can your kitty still fit into her bikini?

That's just silly. Cats don't fret over weight gain. They know they are beautiful no matter what their size. But cats add pounds so gradually that many cat parents don’t even notice until the scale tells the story. And that might become a health issue.

I wrote this article back in 2022 after a visit with a sweet patient named Elsie — and I still think about her when cats come in carrying more weight than their little frames can handle. 🐱

And because this comes up in my exam room almost every week, I’m bringing this post back. The information here is some of the most important I can share with you as a cat owner.

Kennels are open Monday-Saturday 11-3:00 pm. Adoptions are still taking place BY APPOINTMENT ONLY, so we recommend coming to the kennels to view the animals only if you are planning to fill out an application. You MUST include proof of home ownership or notarized letter from your landlord WITH your application to be considered. Applications will be reviewed and pre-approved for a subsequent meet and greet/adoption appointment.

🐈 Attention cat parents! Did you know there are over 800 tick species worldwide — and about a dozen of them can make your cat seriously ill? Ticks lurk in vegetation and can attach within minutes of climbing onto your kitty. Once attached, they can transmit life-threatening diseases. (Read this poster from Cornell Feline Health Center for disease and symptom specifics!)

The good news? Prevention is straightforward. Keep cats indoors when possible, and use only feline-approved tick prevention products — never a dog product on a cat. They come in spot-on, oral, and collar forms, but only prescription versions will work.
