Lets talk salmon poisoning!
Some of the fish that can affect dogs are: Salmon, Trout, Lamprey, Sculpin and Sturgeon. After ingesting infected raw fish and hits the intestinal tract, the flukes release rickettsiae. Those organisms then spread to the liver, lungs, and lymph nodes causing necrosis, hemorrhage and hyperplasia. Symptoms such as, fever, vomiting, diarrhea and anorexia, start 6-10 days after ingesting infected raw fish. If salmon poisoning is identified in time, it is treatable. Diagnosis starts with an exam, and checking f***l for fluke eggs under the microscope. If your dog has started vomiting, hospitalization is recommended for IV fluids. Once recovered, most dogs have a permanent immunity to the strain they were infected with, but can still contract other stains.
if you think you dog has ingested raw fish please call your veterinarian.

How significant is my pet's risk for heartworm infection?
Many factors must be considered, even if heartworms do not seem to be a problem in your local area. Your community may have a greater incidence of heartworm disease than you realize, or you may unknowingly travel with your pet to an area where heartworms are more common. Heartworm disease is also spreading to new regions of the country each year. Stray and neglected dogs and certain wildlife such as coyotes, wolves, and foxes can be carriers of heartworms. Mosquitoes blown great distances by the wind and the relocation of infected pets to previously uninfected areas.
