Hi!
Warning: long post
Based on yesterday's poll, we will extend our hours to 9-4, beginning today. Here are the reasons:
We are two people doing this. We have no employees. We are not paid to sit and wait for customers when nobody comes (as a minimum wage employee would be-which we cannot afford). We have surveyed our busy times and between the hours of 3-7 very few people come- I'm talking 1 or 2 customers. We have been doing this for 30 years and that is a lot of survey data. Which is why historically we have not been open say, 8-8 or 8-5 , things like that. Perhaps it is our location? Slightly harder to get to, not on a main road or highway?...hope you can understand. As we are aging, this very physical job is getting more and more difficult to do every year. This season, in particular, has been very challenging for me to get all the pruning done and mowing. It has rained up here almost every day for a while and I have mowed probably 3 times more than normal. Which as you can see is now very difficult to accomplish as the crop is huge and berries fall off when mowed near...don't want to be the bearer of bad news, just wanted to explain why we cannot be open 12 hrs a day, 7 days a week like other places. This is also a reason we do not sell our berries in stores anymore-we have no employees anymore. As for not being open on Monday? We have seen over many years 1 or 2 customers the entire day. Plus I need a day to catch up with the mowing and pruning-I have always preferred to not do this while we are open, to give customers a quiet, picking experience. I wanted to share with you openly and honestly why we are open fewer hours than other farms. The caveat for us is, often, many berries never get picked. It is our price to pay, for getting older, and not being able to afford more labor. Thanks for reading. Hope to see ya'll up on the hill π
