ANSWER: This is a cast saw!

A cast saw is specialized for cutting through cast material without cutting skin. This allows us to remove a cast without causing further injury to the animal.

We often will cut a cast to re-use as a custom splint while the animal continues to heal.

ANSWER: Hoof trimming shears. πŸπŸ‘πŸ¦™πŸ

These shears may look like pruning shears but they are very sharp and used for trimming the cloven hooves of our small ruminant and camelid patients.

We recommend that goats and sheep have their hooves trimmed quarterly to prevent lameness and hoof disease.

Some patients may require more frequent trims to correct their feet and keep them comfortable.

Camelids are typically trimmed as needed or when they are shorn.

Keeping an eye on your herd's hoof health is key!

Neon green nasal discharge!
Is this horse sick? 🀧 Nope! Just a fun finding for your Tuesday.
This horse was seen for a squinty eye. Upon examination, fluorescein stain was applied to his eye to evaluate his cornea for ulcers.
Following the exam, the stain was seen draining from the horse's nose! This is because the tear duct drains through the sinus. πŸ‘ƒ

Answer: These are markers for radiographs!

These markers are used to help us understand the orientation of the anatomy after the image has been taken. They are made of a radio-lucent metal so that they show up in the final image.

The placement of the markers is important! For example, they always have to be lateral on dorsopalmar views (from the front of a limb), and cranial on lateral views (from the side of a limb).

These markers allow us to better evaluate a three-dimensional structure that is now in a two-dimensional radiograph image. Consequently, they do also help us to remember if it was the left or right side of the animal that we were focused on! πŸ˜‰
