Puppies! Guys puppies are not easy. These are my top tips for helping with the puppy stage. It takes a lot of work and time to raise a good dog. Puppies also have a ton of energy. Be prepared to spend a lot of time providing positive outlets for that energy or they will find ways to expend it....and we usually don't like what they choose. Remember your puppy doesn't come knowing how to navigate the world. We have to teach that to them. They will make mistakes and so will we. Have patience and be consistent and you will make it through!

If you expect a well behaved dog, you have to put in the time to provide fulfillment. Dogs are not sedentary creatures. They need movement outside of their yard. Most dogs that are labeled as anxious, crazy, obnoxious and destructive, are actually just under fulfilled. Backyards don’t exercise dogs, people do. 🫶🏻

It’s been two years with this sweet girl! Rescuing a senior dog has been the best experience. She was our missing puzzle piece and I will always feel so incredibly honored that we are a part of her journey and her forever home. We love her so much! Two years have gone so fast and yet it seems like she has always been with us. She will be 9 in a few months and we hope we get to celebrate many more gotcha days and birthdays with her. She’s easily one of the best decisions we’ve made! From breeder dog to therapy dog! She’s accomplished so much! She’s forever a testament that old dogs can learn new tricks and that rescues and seniors are amazing.

Dogs don’t actually know better. Dogs don’t have a moral compass or the ability to discern right from wrong. What dogs do have the ability to do is rely on instincts, routines and behavior patterns that work for them. Dogs will repeat behaviors that get rewarded, whether negatively or positively.

If your dog is continually repeating a behavior that you feel is negative, ask yourself, “how does my dog find this behavior rewarding?” Are they chasing something? Chasing is a highly rewarding activity for your dog. Do they bark when in the kennel? Are you letting them out each time they bark? If so, you are rewarding the barking.

Often times we don’t realize that we are actually rewarding behaviors we don’t want. An example of this is petting your dog when they jump up. We just rewarded that behavior.

When dealing with frustrating behaviors with your dog, instead of assuming they know better, look to make the behavior you do want from them more rewarding than the negative one. Our dogs are doing the best they can with the information we provide them.

I know this seems like a lot of things to look for, but choosing a puppy is a big decision and a lifelong commitment. 🐾 Backyard breeding can lead to health and behavior issues that most owners aren’t ready for, which often ends up in crowded shelters.

I believe every dog should come into your life in a way that works for you, but do your research first so you’re fully prepared!

Here are my top tips for buying from a responsible breeder.

But most of the time, they’re just unfulfilled.
Dogs are designed for movement, exploration, and purpose.
When we don’t meet those needs, frustration shows up as “bad behavior.”
Fulfillment isn’t just training — it’s meeting their biological needs.
Move with your dog. Play with them. Let them be who they were meant to be.
