Playing Fetch: Does your dog chase the ball but not bring it back? It helps to teach this behavior in steps. Today we started by introducing our puppy to a plush toy which we could hide treats inside. We held the toy out for our dog to see it. When he touched the toy with his nose, we said the word “Yes” and gave him a treat. We repeated this step five times. Then we put the toy on the ground right in front of us and waited for him to touch it with his nose. We wrapped up our training session by playing with our pup and this special toy. We gave him a treat and put that toy away. We will only bring that toy out for his special training time.

Dog Enrichment: We offered our pup this bouncing bunny toy. It plays several different songs and hops around. She was very curious about this new toy, When they go to pick up the treat they will leave the stick. That way you can easily pick up the stick while they are distracted eating the treat. Please remember to monitor your dog’s body language closely. If they are showing any signs of resource guarding it's important to consult with an experienced animal behaviorist. Please remember every animal is unique and what is appropriate for one pet may not be for another.

Cat Door Openings: We purchased a new device called a “Door Buddy” which attaches to the door and door frame. This device keeps the door propped open just wide enough for our cats to enter and exit. They now have their own private entrance into our basement.

Mealtime Scavenger Hunt: We split up our dog’s regular meal into five portions and placed each portion into a separate bowl. Then we hid the bowls around the living room for our dog to find. When we make changes to our pet’s environment, we encourage our pets to use their cognitive abilities to forage, manipulate, and interact with new objects. If you decide to use this idea for your pets, please make sure to supervise them. Please remember every animal is unique and what is appropriate for one pet may not be for another.
