Not all dogs are built the same—and neither are their coats.
If your dog has longer or curlier fur and you’ve ever worried about tangles or matting while using a prong collar, this post is for you. 🧔

Swipe through for 5 grooming tips that have worked wonders with our clients. The titles are in the images, but check below for the full breakdown:

🧼 1. Detangle Before and After Use
Before putting on the collar, gently brush out the neck area using a slicker brush or a detangling comb. After removing the collar post-walk, do a quick brush-through to prevent mats from forming or tightening.

🧓 2. Use a Coat Conditioning Spray
A leave-in detangling or conditioning spray can reduce friction and help hair glide under the collar instead of bunching up. Look for ones made for dogs with curly or long coats.

šŸ‘• 3. Add a Bandana or Thin Fabric Barrier
You can place a soft cotton bandana or snood under the collar during walks. It acts as a protective layer while still allowing the collar to function properly. This is especially helpful for dogs who are prone to skin or coat sensitivity.

āœ‚ļø 4. Keep Neck Hair Trimmed
Regularly trimming the fur just around the collar line (either at home or during grooming appointments) can reduce tangling and matting caused by friction and pressure.

🪔 5. Rotate Collar Position Slightly
If the collar tends to rest in the same spot every walk, rotate its position slightly each time. This prevents repetitive pressure or rubbing on the same section of fur.

✨ You can use prong collars and keep your dog’s coat healthy—don’t let the fear of matting keep you from using the tools that work.

Size matters. But not the way you think.

When it comes to training tools, a one-size-fits-all mindset sets you up for failure. The wrong size prong collar can delay progress and confuse communication. That’s why Kimberland Collars created the first micro prong collars built with your dog’s weight and build in mind—from 1.5mm Ultralite for teacups under 8lbs, to 2.25mm for stronger dogs 26lbs and up.

Made with precision parts. Assembled by hand in rural Washington.
