Not to be left out, Nearly A Lady caught a ride home this afternoon, though she wasn't going far. She went down the road to Alyssa in Maryland who is excited to bring her along as her partner for pleasure riding. The two seemed to form a bond very quickly during Alyssa's visit yesterday. Can't wait to hear how they grow together!

Available in Fair Hill, MD: One chonky OTTB!

Tenax is a big, 16.2 hand, 8 year old, bay gelding who came to After the Races in partnership with Beyond the Wire in Maryland. Not having hit the board for some time, his connections decided it was time to let him pursue a new career. He made just over $100,000 in 34 starts, and is by Great Notion, with his dam being a granddaughter of Awesome Again.

Tenax had a great intake evaluation here with our vet finding him sound and without any known limitations. She gave him a great prognosis to go in any direction. While he only sticks just over 16.2 hands, this horse is built BIG. He is a very solid horse who will take up a lot of leg. Tall riders definitely should keep him in consideration.

This big guy has really relaxed and settled into farm life and has been a joy to handle and interact with. All of our volunteers can catch, lead, groom, and handle him without any concerns. He's also shown himself to be a very kind horse on the ground. He's currently turned out with another gelding without issue and is enjoying some time to be a horse before we put him back under saddle to begin his retraining.

Tenax has no vices, is front shod (and in need of a good, consistent farrier program to adjust the angles he arrived with from the track), and is available now to someone willing and able to restart an OTTB themselves. We'll start him back in work sometime in early June if he's not adopted sooner.

Just about ready for her new home, and photos do not do this girl justice!

Located in Fair Hill, MD, Bella Mente is a 3 year old, 17+ hand, bay filly who came to us in partnership with Beyond the Wire in Maryland. Bella is by Silver State and out of a Midnight Lute mare. This means she's also a descendent of Hard Spun, Empire Marker, Real Quiet, and Pulpit!

This big girl retired after just one race. The vet that oversaw her care at the track suspected a possible tibia fracture and she received a few months of rest before coming to us. Our vet found her to be sound and very clean with a terrific prognosis for her next career. Since her first checkup, Bella has graduated from hand walking to having access to a hospital paddock, and now to small turnout! This means very soon she'll be cleared to return to full turnout and back to work!

Bella has been a very sweet girl to work with, has no vices, and is a very attractive filly. She currently sticks just a hair over 17.0 hands and likely still has some growing to do, so she will need someone who appreciates a big horse! She is not expected to have any limitations and will likely be ready to go back to work under saddle around July or August.

Bella is available for adoption to someone willing and able to responsibly complete the last bit of her rehab, and with the experience to restart her themselves when she is ready for that.

For professionals or serious adult amateurs out there, this filly is likely a great one to take a chance on!

It's dental day here for the horses of After the Races! When did you last get your horse's teeth checked? We try to make sure everyone here gets checked at least every 6 months, and recommend that to all our adopters. If you're in our area (PA, MD, NJ), we can highly recommend Duncan Equine Dental Services! Kate has been doing our dental work for well over a decade. ATR and vet approved. 👍

Gorgeous, sweet, fancy, and still single! Nearly A Lady is looking for her next partner. Whether you're looking for a special lady or know some single friends, she's worth a look!

Available for adoption in Fair Hill, MD, Lady is a 5 year old, 15.3 hand, bay mare that came to us in partnership with Beyond the Wire in Maryland. Her race trainer was incredibly fond of her and said she is a very affectionate mare that he loved to spoil with peppermints, carrots, and even sweet potatoes!

Lady has no vices, is very personable, and is an easy one to fall in love with. She has been turned out with geldings and mares without issue. On the ground she's a very sweet, easy-going mare who loves attention, peppermints, and being groomed by our volunteers.

We started Lady back into work this spring, starting with a lot of ground work and now progressing to having several rides at the walk and trot while she learns the ropes of being a riding horse. Lady is very green, forward-thinking, and athletic. While not for beginners, she will be a lot of fun for an experienced rider of OTTBs as she is very fancy and tries incredibly hard to work out what is being asked of her by her rider. She is going to turn heads no matter what career you ultimately pursue with her.

While she could go in many directions, we think she could have what it takes to be an endurance horse. What direction would you take her in?

Sailor is now pending adoption!

(previously) Ready for Adoption in Fair Hill, MD: One classy warhorse with some chrome!

Sailor's Return is a 16.1 hand, 8 year old, chestnut gelding who came to us in partnership with Beyond the Wire in Maryland. He sold for $275,000 as a yearling and must have looked every bit of his breeding at the time as he's by Declaration of War and a grandson of Storm Cat (on his dam's side).

Sailor is definitely made of some sterner stuff. After 72 races, his legs are remarkably clean, tight, and he was very sound both at the track right after his last race and here at ATR for his intake evaluation. Everyone, our vet included, is impressed by the incredible condition he arrived in and he has a great prognosis to go in any direction for his next career.

Sailor has also been a gentleman since arrival. He's been very kind and straightforward to handle and is currently turned out with another gelding without issue. He's enjoying some very well deserved downtime to be a horse and let down from his incredible career, and we will likely start him back under saddle again in June if he's not adopted sooner.

Sailor is certainly available to someone willing and able to restart him themselves, and we suspect with his history he will be a very fun project to bring along. Warhorses like him typically come with a been-there-seen-that attitude that makes for an incredible partner.

What direction would you take him in?
