We hope you are all staying warm and safe during this winter storm! We sure wish we had the winter coat of our next Breed of the Week... the Bernese Mountain Dog! ❄️ Concluding our January series, the "Cold-Weather and Winter Coat Breeds", read on to learn more about this beautiful dog! 🐾
🩵 Personality: Bernese Mountain Dogs are known for their gentle, affectionate, and calm personality. They thrive on companionship with their owners and while they’re generally friendly, they can be shy around strangers.
🏔️ Origin: Originating in the Swiss Alps, specifically the canton of Bern, these pups were bred for herding cattle, guarding property, and pulling carts for farmers. They are one of four Swiss Mountain Dog breeds.
⭐️ Fun Fact: You may not know that Bernese Mountain Dogs have partially webbed feet! This trait helped them navigate snowy and rugged terrain in the Alps. Another interesting fact is that in the late 19th century, the breed was near extinction as other working breeds were imported to the area.
🫧 Grooming Tip: Brushing regularly and utilizing professional grooming can help remove excess fur during shedding periods. Avoid shaving, as their undercoat helps insulate their body in both cold and hot temperatures. Instead, ask your groomer for a light trim as needed to help tidy their paws, rear, sanitary areas, and ears.
🐕 Training Tip: Focus on early socialization, loose-leash training to manage their strength, and have patience, as they are gentle but sometimes slow-moving and sensitive. Mental stimulation and short, positive training sessions help keep them engaged.
❤️ Perfect for: Moderate energy home life; families with children; owners who love partaking in outdoor activities.
