Please don’t release your aquarium fish into the wild! In most cases, we accept surrenders

NEVER release a pet goldfish into a pond or lake.

It is NOT a rescue. It is an introduction.

A common goldfish, Carassius auratus, is a domesticated carp. In open water, it can grow far larger than most people expect, sometimes over a foot long. Released fish breed, stir up bottom sediments while feeding, uproot plants, and cloud the water. That murky water blocks light and weakens the shallow habitat many native species depend on.

Goldfish also compete with native fish for food and space, and wildlife agencies across the U.S. warn that aquarium releases can become invasive populations. One fish may not stay one fish for long. A pond can change quietly, then all at once.

If you cannot keep your fish, do not set it free. Return it to a pet store if they accept surrenders, rehome it with another keeper, or contact a local aquarium society or rescue.

What looks like mercy in a bowl can become damage in a wetland.
Some ecosystems are undone one small release at a time.

The Happy Pet will be closed for a period of ten days, starting from April 11 and ending on April 20th. We will reopen on April 21st. Take advantage of our current stock of feeder fish, mice, rats, and insects to ensure your pets are well-fed during our closure!
