As we move into late spring, those of us living around a strong coyote population should be aware that breeding season is transitioning into denning season. During this time, coyotes become significantly more territorial and defensive, especially around perceived threats to their dens.
We recently treated a patient that was severely injured in an attack—multiple bite wounds and a fractured limb. These aren’t rare, one-off events this time of year. Pets that are left outside, even briefly, are at real risk.
Practical takeaway:
Supervise pets outdoors, especially at dawn and dusk, and avoid wooded or brush-heavy areas where dens may be present.
