In the world of livestock, an appetite isn't just about hunger—it’s a vital sign. Whether you’re raising cattle, sheep, goats, or horses, a sudden lack of interest in food is often the first red flag that something is wrong.

Why is a loss of appetite an emergency?
🐑Hidden Pain: Livestock are prey animals and naturally hide illness. If they have stopped eating, they are likely past the point of "just feeling a little off."
🐑Rumen Health: For ruminants, the digestive system needs constant movement. When they stop eating, the healthy bacteria in the rumen can begin to die off, leading to secondary issues like acidosis or bloat.
🐑Metabolic Crisis: Animals (especially pregnant ones) can quickly fall into a metabolic tailspin, like ketosis or pregnancy toxemia, if they aren’t getting the energy they need.
🐑Dehydration: Food and water intake usually go hand-in-hand. An animal that isn't eating is often not drinking enough, leading to rapid dehydration.

Don't wait for the animal to "perk up" on its own. Early intervention is the key to a successful recovery and keeping your herd healthy.📞 Give us a call at 330-871-8013 the moment you notice a change in appetite!

🌟 Staff Spotlight: Meghan, RVT 🌟
One of her favorite things about working here is that she learns something new every single day, and she loves that the management at Red Star is so invested in continuing education. This commitment to knowledge helps us better serve all our patients!
Speaking of patients, Meghan's absolute favorite are dogs, with a special place in her heart for black labs. 🐾
At home, she has her own family pack, which includes two black lab mixes, one cat, and her two children. We're so proud to have such a dedicated and knowledgeable professional on our team!
