JACKIE’S STORY
233 DAYS. STILL WAITING

Ten Years Young
My name is Jackie, and I’m a 10 year old American Staffordshire/mixed breed girl with a heart full of love and a wish that gets harder to keep to myself with every passing day. I weigh 55 pounds, and have a beautiful white coat, and a pretty laid-back outlook on life. I’m the kind of girl who enjoys a good nap, a favorite toy, a tasty frozen pup cup, and simply being near the people I love. But since March 14, 2026, I’ve spent 233 days at the shelter, waiting for someone to see me-not just as a senior dog, but as a wonderful companion who still has so much to give.

I’m not asking for grand adventures or a house full of excitement. Give me a cozy bed, a little time to play, some food puzzles to keep my mind busy, and a person whose company I can enjoy, and I’m a happy girl. I’m independent enough to do my own thing, but I like knowing my people are nearby. I’ll happily watch the world go by through the window, greet deliveries with a little enthusiasm, and settle down for a peaceful night in my own dog bed. Honestly, after all this waiting, wouldn’t it be lovely to trade a kennel for a couch and spend my golden years right where I belong?

In the comments below you'll see a video of Jackie on a field trip to the farmers market back in April.

I agree that mobile has additional expenses and convenience built into the price, and travel time is working time too. One-on-one salon appointments also need to account for having that time reserved exclusively for one dog, while a traditional salon can spread its expenses across more appointments.

But I think a big issue in our area is how much grooming is being underpriced in general.

The price of an appointment has to cover more than shampoo and the time spent clipping in a good or bad condition. There’s insurance, utilities, equipment maintenance, blade sharpening, cleaning supplies, booking software, continuing education, taxes, and all the work done between appointments. There also needs to be money left to pay ourselves and keep the business running when equipment breaks or we need time off.

Product choices matter too. Affordable doesn’t automatically mean poor quality, but buying whatever is cheapest without considering suitability, dilution, and performance can cost more in the long run. Keeping prices low shouldn’t depend on cutting corners.

For my own business, I have to consider my experience, certifications, products, and the individual time each dog needs. Those investments have to be reflected in what I charge.

Each business needs to calculate its prices independently, but I do think we need more education around the actual cost of providing this service. A full appointment book doesn’t necessarily mean a profitable business, and being busy shouldn’t mean working ourselves into the ground without enough income to support ourselves.
