716-672-1991 Many aspects of our organization have changed over the years, but our goal has stayed the same.

The Lakeshore Humane Society is a non-profit, all volunteer organization, dedicated to helping protect the welfare of all animals and providing humane education to our community. The organization was established in 1980 under the name of The Dunkirk Humane Society, later renamed as we expanded our area of service to include the entire north end of Chautauqua County. We strive to get funding throug

h donations and grants to support our spay/neuter assistance program and to help us pay for operating costs, primarily veterinary bills. As always, we are very thankful to our generous sponsors who enable us to continue our work in the community. All money raised or donated stays in our community and helps animals in need. Animals in the care of The Lakeshore Humane Society are housed at our adoption center at 431 East Chestnut Street in Dunkirk. Space restricts the number of animals in our care at any given time it does enables us to get to know each animal better, leading to more successful pairings with new owners. All animals leaving our care must be spayed or neutered prior to adoption and owners are required to sign an adoption contract detailing our standards of care for their new pet. Animals that are deemed too young to be altered are provided with a voucher that covers the cost of surgery. A reasonable donation is required at the time of adoption. Anyone interested in bettering the welfare of animals is welcome to join our organization. There are many ways you can help the animals and us. We meet the third Thursday of every month at 6:30 p.m. in our adoption center located at 431 E. Chestnut Street, Dunkirk, NY. Our phone number is: 716-672-1991. Our mail address is 431 E. Chestnut Street, Dunkirk, NY 14048 or you can contact us though this site. We hope to see you soon! The Adoption Center hours are by adoption appointment only. We are going to have many adoption days throughout the year when we will be open on different Saturdays for people to come , look, meet and adopt their four-legged family member. Also, we will be holding fundraisers at the center so that you may visit the animals and adopt then, too.

This dear girl is Lady. Lady is a five year-old silver gray female. She is such a sweetheart.❤️❤️ Once she gets to know you, you'll have a friend for life and she likes to sit in your lap. Lady, however, is very shy and timid in new places and upon introduction into a new home, she will go into extensive and prolonged hiding. She was adopted out twice and returned twice because her adopters were not prepared or willing enough to deal with such a shy cat. Please. Let's make her third adoption her last. She tolerates other cats well, so a multi cat household would be fine. She cherishes and looks forward to human affection. There are proven ways for working with a shy cat, and we will help you and coach you through this. Small children are not recommended. Lady would benefit more from a quieter and calmer home. She may be OK with a respectful dog. Lady will need a special adapter with some experience in cat behavior and a lot of patience and desire to help work with her and help her overcome her shyness and adapt comfortably to a loving home. She is a real sweetheart once you get to know each other.. Please ask to spend some time with her on your next visit. Wednesdays 6pm-8pm and Saturdays noon-3pm. Online application and additional photos linked in comments.

This lovely lady is Bella! Bella is a little over four years old. She's a very sweet, loving girl as you can see here. Once she gets to know you you'll have a lap cat for life, so if you want a loving lap cat, Bella is definitely your girl! Bella has only one drawback... She is not fond of other cats so therefore she would need to be your one and only girl. She's very affectionate and cherishes human companionship. She would be a wonderful addition to any home! (With no other cats, that is!) Bella is kept separate from the other cats in the shelter, so please ask for her when you come to visit. She'd really love to see you!❤️ If you would like to invite Bella into your home, please fill out our online application or stop in during open hours Wednesday 6-8pm or Saturday from 12-3pm.

Here is Fitz! Fitz is quickly becoming a favorite among volunteers! He was pretty rough when he first came to us a few months ago not letting anyone touch him or come near him at all. He has really grown and progressed into a very well balanced, and well behaved kitty cat! He loves human interaction and he loves sitting in your lap once he gets to know you. And he loves to play with toys! He can still get a little nippy if overstimulated so younger children may not be best for him. He gets along well with other cats and he would make a great addition to any home! If you are interested in giving Fitz the life he deserves, please fill out our online application or stop in during open hours Wednesday 6-8pm or Saturday from 12-3pm.

Flash
Breed: American Eskimo Dog
Age: Young
Gender: Male
If you’re looking for a loyal companion with a heart full of love and a personality that shines as bright as his snowy white coat, Flash might just be your perfect match!
This handsome young boy is bursting with energy, charm, and affection. He’s playful, curious, and always ready to make you smile with his goofy antics. Once he trusts you, Flash will be your shadow — loyal, loving, and eager to please.
Flash is still learning that the world is a safe and friendly place. He can be a bit timid around men, so he’ll do best in a patient home willing to give him the time and reassurance he needs to build confidence. A gentle voice and positive encouragement will go a long way in helping him feel secure.
At the shelter, Flash has shown friendly interest in other dogs, and he may enjoy a canine companion to help show him the ropes and share in playtime. We are recommending older children only.
Because of his breed, Flash will need regular grooming to keep his beautiful white coat healthy and mat-free. Brushing several times a week and routine grooming appointments will help him look and feel his best.
If you’re ready to welcome a bright, loving, and slightly shy sweetheart into your life, come meet Flash! He’s ready to find his forever home and share a lifetime of love and snuggles. Please fill out our online application or stop in during open hours. Wednesday 6-8pm or Saturday 12-3p.

Matilda is one of our ‘difficult to adopt’ cats. It would be so great if she could find her person and go to her furever home this coming holiday season. She is a little over 3 years old. She tolerates other cats well, so she would be OK in a multi cat home.
She’s not a snuggler, she’s indifferent to human contact and human companionship and doesn’t go looking for it. This may (or may not) change if she is in a loving home. There are no guarantees but a little bit of love and patience can go a long way with many kitties. She can be pet and caressed as you can see. Matilda is looking for a patient and understanding adopter who will accept her as she is. Small children are not recommended as she won’t play with them and she can get aggravated if provoked too much. Matilda deserves a human or a family that can accept her and love her as is. Won’t you please consider visiting with Matilda next time you are in? Please stop in Wednesdays from 6PM-8PM or Saturdays from noon to 3PM.
