👏Know the warning signs of an emergency!👏
1. When a male cat is failing to produce urine, vocalizing in the litter box, or dribbling small amounts of urine, it is likely he is experiencing a urinary blockage. Urinary blockages are often caused by crystals in the urine blocking the urethra. If not treated, it can quickly lead to major medical complications.
2. Female dogs who are intact, or not spayed, are at risk for Pyometra. Pyometra is an infected uterus that is cured by removing the uterus, or spaying, the dog. Common symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, and vaginal discharge occurring typically 2-8 weeks following the heat cycle.
3. Most people know about chocolate, but grapes are another very common household food that is highly toxic to both cats and dogs. There is no "safe" amount, and as little as one grape can cause a reaction, including damage to the kidneys. Symptoms of grape toxicity include vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and abdominal discomfort.
4. While panting is completely normal during play, a long walk, while cooling down, or when excited, unprompted or prolonged panting can be a symptom of a more serious health problem. Heavy breathing can be a sign of heat stroke, severe pain, heart complications, and more.
5. Sudden loss of the use of the hind legs can be a cause of a serious emergent medical issue such as a slipped spinal disc, a blood clot, a stroke, and more. All of these qualify as a medical emergency and should be addressed immediately.
