August is National Immunization Awareness Month! 💉

One of the most important vaccines for your dog is the Lyme vaccine! Though it may be considered a non-core vaccine, we highly encourage keeping the annual Lyme vaccine current. Lyme Disease is one of the biggest threats to your dog's health in this area. We are even diagnosing Lyme Disease in "indoor only" dogs. If your dog goes out just to potty, they are still at risk of picking up an infected tick! Ticks are active year-round, even during the winter! Lyme Disease can lead to Lyme Nephritis, fatal kidney failure. Other dogs may never show any symptoms of infection. There is no way to determine which symptoms your dog will show. Protect your dog with year-round tick prevention and the annual Lyme vaccine!

Saturday was National Take Your Cat to the Vet Day! 🐱

Cats are typically easy keepers, but they should have annual exams, just like dogs! Even if they're indoor only, they can still have underlying health issues. Cats are very stoic and masters at hiding illness or pain. It is very common to have dental health issues, even at a young age. Overweight cats are at a higher risk for diabetes and other diseases. Bringing them in yearly for exams helps us catch these health concerns early, while they can still be corrected!

When your pet comes in for an ear infection, why do we swab their ears to collect a sample? 🔬

Getting a sample of the debris in the ear helps us determine if it's a bacterial or fungal infection. There are different shapes of bacteria, round and rod, which can help us determine which medication will work best to treat the infection. If yeast is present, that also affects the treatment plan. Looking at the debris under the microscope takes away the guesswork and helps us treat your pet's ear infection correctly the first time! For unresolved or chronic infections, we may recommend a culture of the bacteria to determine if it's resistant to any antibiotics and which one will work best.
