🐾 Memorial Day Pet Safety Tips 🇺🇸

As we head into the holiday weekend filled with family gatherings, and fun in the sun, don’t forget to keep your pets safe and stress-free! Here are a few important tips:

1. Crating your pet is okay!
You may want your pet to be part of the festivities, but large crowds, loud noises, and unfamiliar people can quickly become overwhelming. If your pet tends to get anxious or overstimulated, it’s perfectly okay (and often safer) to leave them at home in a quiet, secure place. A cozy crate with their favorite blanket and toy can be a calming retreat—not a punishment.

2. Microchip & ID Tags
Make sure your pet’s microchip is registered and your contact information is up to date. Accidents can happen quickly, especially with gates or doors left open during gatherings. Also, ensure your pet wears a collar with an ID tag that includes your current phone number—this allows for quick contact if your pet gets lost.

3. Watch the Grill & Party Foods
Many Memorial Day foods (like onions, grapes, chocolate, and bones) are toxic to pets. Keep food and drinks out of reach, and make sure guests know not to sneak your pet any “treats.”

4. Fireworks are scary to most animals
The loud booms and flashing lights of fireworks are terrifying for most animals. Keep pets indoors during fireworks displays and create a calm environment—close windows, turn on soothing music, and stay nearby if you can.

5. Hydration & Shade
If your pet will be outside during the day, make sure they have plenty of water and access to shade. Heatstroke can happen fast, especially in the Texas sun!

Come walk some of our amazing shelter dogs and give them all the love they deserve! Sniffari happens every Saturday and Sunday at 9:00 AM right here at the shelter.

🎉 Po Found His Forever Home! 🐾
We’re thrilled to share that Po has officially been adopted! 💙 His journey to this moment was made possible by the love and dedication of his incredible foster family, who gave him the perfect foundation to thrive. Thanks to them, Po was ready to jump into this new chapter with confidence (and a wagging tail). Congrats to Po and his forever family — it was meant to be! 🏡✨ Happy Tails Po!!

It’s not often when a family comes in looking for a big dog that’s been at the shelter for a long time, but when we get that family in - we get excited! This family fell in love with Luisa and took her home on a trial adoption…. and just a few days later they finalized her adoption! 😭❤️
We are all so happy for Luisa and her new family! Happy Tails sweet girl 🐾

Xena is all tucked in for the night. Thank goodness we got her to the vet. She was in so much pain. But, she has decided to fight. We will get blood work results tomorrow. She got a pain injection and much needed antibiotics and antifungal meds along with steroids. She has a long road to recovery but with your help we can get her there. We named her Xena, hoping that she is a warrior and hasn't given up. Found walking the streets of Dickinson asking for help. We are headed to the vet with her now. She is lethargic, emaciated, and dehydrated. We are experiencing an overload of animals that need medical treatment. If you can help, please donate to our STAR program. UPDATE ON GIZMO
💔 Gizmo Needs Us Now More Than Ever 💔

Our sweet Gizmo has had a rough day at the vet. He’s been diagnosed with sarcoptic mange and a severe skin infection. To make matters worse, one of his eyes has ruptured and will need to be removed. 💔

But right now, he’s too fragile for surgery. We have to get him stronger first. He’s on two kinds of eye drops, antibiotics, and pain medication while we wait for his body to catch up to his brave spirit.

We’re asking for your prayers, your shares, and if you’re able — your donations.

🙏 Our STAR (Special Treatment and Recovery) Program is what helps cats like Gizmo. Right now, we are overwhelmed. So many animals in need, and the costs are staggering.
