🐾 DALMATIAN PATCHES: PROS & CONS! ⚫🤍
This soda litter has a little extra flavor! 🥤🐾 We have FOUR patched puppies in this litter: three girls and one boy! That makes this the perfect opportunity to talk about one of the more unique markings found in Dalmatians.
Did you know that some Dalmatians are born with large patches of color instead of the usual scattered spots? Let’s break down what patches are and their pros and cons!
⚫ WHAT ARE PATCHES?
Patches are large, solid areas of color that are present at birth. Unlike typical Dalmatian spots, which develop and become more noticeable as puppies grow, patches are already visible when puppies are born. They’re commonly found on the head, ears, or body.
✨ THE PROS
🐾 A unique look: Patches give each Dalmatian a distinctive appearance. No two patched dogs have exactly the same pattern!
🐾 Part of Dalmatian history: Patching is a naturally occurring marking in the breed. A patched Dalmatian isn’t a mix or a different breed!
🐾 Easy to recognize: Those larger markings make patched Dalmatians stand out from the crowd.
🐾 Still 100% Dalmatian: A patch doesn’t make a dog any less of a Dalmatian. These markings are part of the breed’s natural genetic variation.
⚠️ THE CONS
🐾 AKC conformation shows: Under the AKC Dalmatian breed standard, patches are a disqualification in conformation competition. However, patched Dalmatians may still be eligible for other activities, depending on the event’s rules.
🐾 Breeding goals: For breeders working toward the traditional Dalmatian appearance, patches are an important trait to understand and consider when planning pairings. Patches occur spontaneously, and are nearly impossible to avoid.
🐾 Misconceptions: Some people mistakenly believe patched Dalmatians are mixed breeds. They’re not! Patching is a recognized Dalmatian marking.
🐾 Not everyone’s preferred look: If you love the classic Dalmatian look with evenly scattered spots, patches might not be what you picture when you think of the breed.
🤍 DO PATCHES AFFECT HEALTH?
Patching itself is a coat marking, not a health problem. It doesn’t automatically mean a puppy is healthier or less healthy than a traditionally spotted littermate. Hearing status is a separate consideration in Dalmatians, regardless of coat pattern.
🥤 A LITTLE SODA LITTER UPDATE!
Our current litter surprised us with FOUR patched puppies: three beautiful girls and one handsome boy! 🖤🤍 Each puppy has their own markings and personality to discover as they grow, and we can’t wait to watch these little sodas develop!
🖤 THE BOTTOM LINE
Patches may not meet the AKC conformation standard, but they are a naturally occurring part of Dalmatian coat variation. Whether you love the traditional spots or the bold look of a patch, there’s something special about every Dalmatian!
Now we want to know… Are you team traditional spots or team patches? 👇🐾
