We had an interesting interaction today at a large chain pet store, one of our friends asked us some information on ball pythons. I thought this may be some pertainant information for all of our friends and family so here is it:

Q: Do ball pythons need UV lighting?

A: simple answer is no, but the answer is much more complex. Here is a short read for anyone who is interested in the extended answer:
No, as they are nocturnal burrowers that get vitamin D from their prey. However, modern reptile care research shows that providing low-level UVB (such as a 5.0 or 7% T5 fluorescent tube) helps them thrive. It supports natural day/night cycles, allows "cryptic basking", aids vitamin D3 synthesis, and improves overall mental and physical health.
